We held another Mission:Possible meet up on the 26th! Thanks so much to Katie Peters from Together We Can Foundation for conducting a "Rock Your Finance" workshop! Thanks also to Tidewater Community College - Virginia Beach Campus for hosting us once again. Our attendees learned all about check writing, budgeting and managing money. Thanks also to Tracy and Jon McGlothian for joining us and sharing info on their BOOST/Project Management program, well as Mark Stevens sharing his experience as an owner at Zero’s Subs. Last month, our friend Sydney Comisky (@sydneybydesign on Instagram) painted a brand new mural to complete our newly renovated offices and to bring joy to youth and young adults in foster care and their caregivers. When a child or youth is placed in foster care, they often leave their homes with little to nothing from home. The first night in foster care is made more difficult by being in a home foreign to them with nothing of their own. During the 2024 legislative session, Governor Youngkin signed legislation that assures youth in foster care in the state of Virginia have access to tuition, on campus housing, and a meal plan at state colleges and universities schools at no cost. Additionally, each school is required to appoint at least one employee to serve as a point of contact for foster youth to help the student navigate through the challenges of higher education. This groundbreaking legislation, sponsored by Virginia Beach Delegate Ann Ferrell Tata, will offer foster youth opportunities for higher education that they never thought was in their grasp. Last weekend (September 22), Connect With A Wish was welcomed by VB Councilman Michael Berlucchi, who is also Community and Government Relations Manager at Chrysler Museum of Art. He presented to our youth groups and led insightful discussions. Gathered youth also experienced captivating art. Last Friday, September 13, the City of Norfolk, VA Department of Human Services hosted a grand opening of their fully renovated offices. Connect With A Wish was invited to further create comfort in the Family Reunification Rooms for children in foster care to securely reunify with their biological parents. We'll be posting more photos of the rest of the building but want to show the before and after of our work.
