Thank you to Dr. Gary Désir for inviting me to facilitate a panel discussion at the conference entitled “Advancing Health Equity: Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic and Beyond.” It was a reflective moment today, thinking back to our response. I was honored to chair this panel of experts including Dr. Jonathan Siner, Dr. Emily Wang, and Dr. Harlan Krumholz to specifically address the “Yale New Haven Health System COVID-19 Multifactorial Response Model.” From scaling up ICU care, standardizing clinical algorithms for COVID patients, examining our approach to incarcerated patients in America, and examining the impact of disparities at scale, this team gave us a moment to be proud but also reflect on what we could do better. On Friday, DPH Deputy Commissioner Jody Terranova, DO, MPA, joined Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz and other state and local officials to visit the gluten free, allergy friendly bakery, Dee’s One Smart Cookie in Glastonbury to highlight National Celiac Disease Awareness Day. After being diagnosed with Celiac disease, Diane “Dee” Kittle thought that she would no longer be able to work as a baker. Wanting to give herself and others safe and delicious options, Kittle opened her own bakery offering gluten free and allergy friendly treats in 2008 – one of the first such bakeries on the East Coast. Shown from left: State Rep. Steve Weir, Dee Kittle, Lt. Governor Bysiewicz, Deputy Commissioner Terranova and from the National Celiac Association, Samantha Morris.

So proud of Grace Carlos for all she’s done at Connecticut Department of Public Health and what more she will do as she moves forward. Far more mature than her years might suggest, she is professional, calm and collected, thoughtful, and insightful. I look forward to celebrating every accolade she receives going forward!
