✨ This evening, I had the privilege of participating in the 119K Commission Event at New London City Hall. As the CHCC Executive Director, a Mom of three public school students, and a Local Board of Education Member, I shared my perspective on Connecticut's silent crisis: 119,000 of our young people, ages 14 to 26, are at risk or disconnected, with futures hanging in the balance. In the discussions tonight, we heard from various group representatives about the need for course correction, the importance of shifting from traditional credential-based to skill-based resumes, creating career pathways that align with local market trends, and ensuring that students are exposed to and engaged with viable career options. 🛠️ One must ask the critical question: what is the root cause of this disconnect? Is it the pervasive digital landscape that hinders social skill development and human connection, or could it be something more foundational—like the removal of industrial arts from public education, which once provided students with a vital introduction to alternative pathways? In Connecticut, the decline of industrial arts and shop classes began in the late 1980s and continued through the 1990s. This shift was influenced by a broader national trend emphasizing college preparatory programs and standardized testing as the primary measures of educational success. By the early 2000s, many of these hands-on programs had been significantly reduced or phased out entirely in favor of more academic subjects. This change effectively closed off a crucial gateway for students to explore and develop skills in trades and technical fields, which were once a staple of the middle and high school curriculum. The elimination of these programs didn't just remove an educational option—it severed a connection to practical, hands-on learning experiences that could ignite a passion for trades and skilled labor. Without this exposure, many students never had the chance to consider careers in these essential fields, contributing to the disconnect we see today. As we consider solutions, it's essential to reflect on these changes. Could the reintroduction of industrial arts and similar programs help bridge this gap, reconnecting students with the practical skills and pathways that align with their interests and the demands of our economy? This question is more pressing than ever as we face a significant shortage of skilled tradespeople in Connecticut and beyond. Another take away from the session was that collaboration is key. With so many groups sharing the same objectives, we must standardize access and experiences across K-12 public education statewide to truly make a difference. We can act now to secure 119,000 futures, and create the pathway for the 500,000 Connecticut public school students currently enrolled. \#119Knowledge #CareerPathways #TradeEducation #CTEducation #WorkforceDevelopment #bluecollarjobs #BringBackShopClass #TheOtherFourYearDegree

🔥 Today, the CHCC Education Committee had the privilege of participating in CTECS HVAC Professional Development Day at A.I. Prince Technical High School! It was a truly rewarding experience to engage with the talented HVAC instructors and share industry insights on the expectations we have for their students. We covered essential service standards, emphasizing Safety, Professionalism, Responsiveness, Accuracy, and Productivity. We also discussed the importance of creating and representing your brand with pride, and the critical role of raising the bar in our industry. CTECS is a prestigious program, known for graduating some of the best apprentices in the field. We're excited to continue supporting and shaping the future of HVAC professionals! #HVAC #CTECS #WorkforceDevelopment #SkilledTrades #ProfessionalDevelopment #TradeTeachers #CHCC #TradeEducation #Apprenticeships #CTContractors CTECS
