Juneteenth marks the ending of slavery in the United States, 159 years ago, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas were proclaimed free by Major General Gordon Granger. It is an important holiday to take pause and reflect on the racism and segregation in our nation's past. While we celebrate an important landmark of growth for our country, we must also highlight that Independence Day in America did not mean independence for all and there is always more work to do.
