The golden dart frog, one of the most poisonous animals on Earth, is of deep cultural importance to Colombia’s Eperãra Siapidaarã community. But it’s under threat due to habitat destruction.   In partnership with Conservación Internacional Colombia, the community is working to restore nature and protect the golden dart frog’s habitat so it can continue to survive.   Norad - Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation

Rangers patrol our lands and protect the world’s most vulnerable species. They are the literal boots on the ground keeping nature and wildlife safe.   This week we sponsored eight rangers, ranger trainers and ranger managers from Conservation International-led projects from Peru, Botswana, Cambodia, Mozambique, South Africa, and the Philippines to attend the 10th IRF World Rangers Congress.   These individuals dedicate their lives to our planet’s safety. And while their roles often take them to some of Earth’s most isolated ecosystems, this week presents a unique opportunity for rangers from all over the world to come together to exchange stories, learn from one another and address challenges they face globally.

This is what the #climatecrisis looks like: #HurricaneMilton exploded to a category 5 in just 12 hours, due, in part, to rising temperature caused by #climatechange. We can no longer afford to ignore the realities of the climate crisis. "I don't really care if people "believe" in climate change or not. I want them to look at the data and do something about it," Conservation International CEO Dr. M Sanjayan said to BBC News' Christian Fraser. While our thoughts and our attention are on Florida's Gulf coast, let us also remember that around the world, the most vulnerable are the most susceptible to these destructive weather events. It is time to act on climate -- and to do so we must protect nature.

I don't really care if people "believe" in climate change or not. I want them to look at the data and do something about it. We can debate what we do, but not that we're facing an existential threat. Let's restore mangroves (as Tampa has lost 50% of theirs), replant wetlands, build more resiliently and save lives and livelihoods. This was the conversation I had with BBC News' Christian Fraser as #HurricaneMilton approaches Florida's Gulf coast--potentially one of the deadliest storms to hit this area.

NEW REPORT: Our planet’s forests are in crisis, and world leaders continue to fall short of their promises to protect them. The 2024 Forest Declaration Assessment – which tracks global progress towards protecting and restoring the world’s forests – has launched. Worldwide, deforestation has increased since adoption of high-level commitments to end forest loss and degradation by 2030. Surging global demand for commodities from agriculture, mining, and forestry compound threats to critical intact forests and wildlife habitats, even as political transitions offer opportunities to change course. The annual assessment, developed by a coalition of civil society and research organizations, finds that: ➡️ 6.37 million hectares of deforestation occurred in 2023, which puts the world starkly off track for achieving the goal of eliminating gross deforestation by 2030. ➡️ The clearing of irreplaceable primary tropical forests accounted for 3.74 million hectares of that total, a number 38% higher than the trajectory needed to reach no loss by 2030. ➡️ High integrity forests continue to be lost and degraded at alarming rates, including boreal and temperate forests in North America and Europe ➡️ Over 1.4 million hectares of forests were lost in forests particularly important to the preservation of biodiversity, otherwise known as forested Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs). The annual assessment of international commitments, including the Glasgow Leaders’ Declaration on Forests and Land Use (2021) and the Kunming Global Biodiversity Framework (2021), tracks progress on eliminating deforestation and forest degradation by 2030. In a recent TIME article, Conservation International Chief Scientist Johan Rockström compares our planet to a patient in critical condition. Six out of nine planetary life-support systems have crossed their "safe operating zone," threatening not only Earth's health but also human well-being and political and economic stability. These systems regulate life on Earth, and no matter where we live, we all depend on them. Rockström argues that the only way to stabilize these systems is through rapid decarbonization—including major investments in nature-based solutions—and a combination of local action, national regulation, and global governance. Small adjustments won’t be enough to pull us back from critical condition; bold, systemic change is needed to secure a stable future.  https://lnkd.in/etUSAfJM

In less than a year, the Global Environment Facility’s Global Biodiversity Framework Fund has moved from launch to full-speed operation, approving and funding four key projects in Brazil, Gabon, and Mexico. As we approach #COP16Colombia, it’s key to understand the impact of the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF) on biodiversity conservation.   One notable initiative is Mexico's MEx30x30, which aims to conserve 30% of the country’s land and marine areas by 2030. With $17 million in funding, this project emphasizes inclusive management of protected areas, directly supporting Indigenous Peoples and local communities.   These efforts represent a shift towards integrated and inclusive conservation strategies, showcasing how the #GBFF can facilitate meaningful investments in nature. Explore the full story to learn more about these developments and their implications for global biodiversity goals:

We are mere weeks away from the 16th United Nations Biodiversity Conference (CBD). In the face of the current global biodiversity crisis, there are big expectations for the outcomes of this year's meeting, which is being held in one of the most biodiverse places on the planet: Cali, Colombia. 📍   Governments, Indigenous leaders, business figureheads, and civil activists will gather to identify the challenges and opportunities in preserving the ecosystems on which all life depends.   🎥Four of Conservation International’s distinguished peers, Carlos Eduardo Correa Escaf, Greta Francesca Iori, Neil Vora, MD, and Monica Medina, share what they hope to see at #COP16.   #COP16Colombia
