TOMORROW AT MIDDAY! FREE WEBINAR (8th November) with Charlie Law MIEMA, ICIOB, CEnv asking the important question: Why You Need to Know about Timber and Carbon? LINK TO REGISTER FOR FREE IN FIRST COMMENT ⬇️ Timber is the ultimate low carbon material. However, if we are to meet our net zero carbon commitments, it will be required in ever increasing quantities to build the low carbon structures of the future. To ensure a project’s carbon targets are met, both embodied and operational carbon must be measured to produce a whole life carbon assessment. There are approved standards that need to be followed when assessing the whole life carbon impact of an asset, and particular rules within these standards to be followed where timber elements are included. #timber #sustainability #netzero #carbonneutral #webinar #freewebinar

📢 In this episode of The Building Podcast, Katherine Evans, owner of “Bold as Brass” and winner of the prestigious “Most Influential Woman in Construction” award in September 2024, talks to Mark Wakeford about what it can be like to be a woman on UK construction sites and the need for better understanding around the challenges that they face. Link in the comments to listen ⬇️ Katherine expands on the steps that the industry needs to continue to take, to stop forcing women out of the sector and the opportunities that this will bring. She describes privilege in a manner that can be used by all to understand the consequences of poor privilege and the role that unconscious bias plays in failing site members who may be (even slightly) different to the “norm”. Katherine’s interview is a call to arms for the industry to be more aware of people, to be kinder to them and to enable this through significantly better conversations at all levels within the industry. #inclusion #diversity #womeninconstruction #privilege #podcast #constructionindustry

📢 Mark Wakeford’s latest Building Podcast with Malcolm Clarke MCIOB at Baxall Construction. Link in the comment to listen to this episode ⬇️ Construction is a people industry. It is “people that build for people” and many in the sector have been looking for the best corporate structure to support this mantra. One such solution is the Employee Ownership Trust, where a trust, owned by all the employees controls more than half the equity of the business. This puts the employees in charge of their own destiny and can support a one team culture within an organisation. Malcolm Clarke, MD of Baxall Construction, a successful tier one regional contractor, has steered his company through the process of having an employee ownership trust, which has allowed the existing directors to sell their equity and a new culture of “We are all in it together”. Malcolm talks through the pros and cons of an EOT, sharing examples of best practice along the way. A great listen for those looking for a different ownership structure to their business.

The last time we had a new Labour government back in 1997 they set up an industry task group, led by Sir John Egan, charged with identifying ways to improve the quality and efficiency of the UK construction industry, and deliver “best value” in infrastructure projects. Their report influenced our thinking for a generation, encouraging us to adopt best practices from other industries, particularly automotive. It advocated radical change, to think beyond the boundaries of our projects to unlock the potential in our supply chains, and to embrace the new discipline of supply chain management. The change of government set Martyn Jones thinking about the transformation we need today if we are to meet their aspirations for productivity-raising infrastructure projects – such as replacing dilapidated schools and hospitals – initiating new green energy projects, and building more council housing. #coevolution #sustainability #ecosystem #leadership #construction #innovation

Congratulations Shropshire Constructing Excellence for holding such a successful 'Meet the Buyer' event!
As a network we exist to drive collaboration within the construction sector so it really was wonderful to see more than 100 business representatives in the room this morning for our Meet the Buyer event. The aim was to connect sub-contractors and supply-chain businesses in Shropshire with some of the region's leading contractors and public sector procurement teams so they could learn more about how they can get involved in the multi-billion pound pipeline of projects across Shropshire. We think it was a job well done. Huge thanks to all the buyers who came along and to our guest speakers - Laura Mort Safety For for providing some detailed insight on the updated Building Safety Act, the challenges and what businesses can do to ensure they are compliant. And to Matt Hickman from Lovell Partnerships Ltd for highlighting the important role construction sector businesses play in delivering positive social value to the communities we serve. Thanks also to Andrew Carpenter from Constructing Excellence Midlands for introducing the event, Mark Barrow, chair of Shropshire Constructing Excellence, for highlighting the major opportunities which exist for businesses and to Telford College for hosting the event and a great breakfast spread. If you came along, we hope it was worthwhile. If you couldn't make it, we very much hope to see you next time.
