A nonprofit news organization dedicated to unlocking knowledge and expertise from academia for the public.
About us
The Conversation US arose out of deep-seated concerns for the fading quality of our public discourse – and recognition of the vital role that academic experts can play in the public arena. Independent and not-for-profit, it is part of a global network of newsrooms first launched in Australia in 2011. The Conversation began its US operations in 2014, and now also publishes in Canada, the UK, France, Indonesia, Africa, Spain as well as Australia. The Conversation’s mission is particularly resonant in the U.S., where people universally sense that the country’s social fabric is strained and the common ground people share is shrinking. Information always has been essential to democracy – a societal good, like clean water. But many now find it difficult to put their trust in the media. And with little consensus about what to believe, it only becomes harder to reach agreement with fellow citizens regarding what’s truthful. The Conversation US seeks to be part of the solution to this problem. The Conversation’s editorial process is deliberate and collaborative. Editors pay close attention to the news environment to identify the issues citizens are concerned about. They reach out to leading scholars across academia and work with them to unlock their knowledge for the broad public. Through a Creative Commons license, we share Conversation US articles – at no charge to news organizations – across the geographic and ideological spectrum. We pay particular attention to strengthening news organizations that are severely under-resourced. The Associated Press distributes The Conversation US articles daily to thousands of newsrooms. Importantly, The Conversation US is committed to information transparency and credibility. Authors are only allowed to write on a subject on which they have proven expertise. They must sign a disclosure statement outlining any relevant funding or affiliations. We ourselves disclose all of The Conversation US’ funders on our homepage and elsewhere.

Gender discrimination even in death: Women were long underrepresented in newspaper obituaries, which treated them differently. ‘Obituaries primarily identified women by their association with men: their husbands, fathers, sons and brothers. Later in the 19th century, a woman’s obituary might include a listing of her public accomplishments – but only if they did not threaten her “true womanhood’.”
Inequality in life – and death: Newspaper obituaries have long discriminated against women

The teaching profession faces a serious morale – and staffing – crisis. A National Education Association (tag: National Education Association) survey of members found that, as of late 2022, a staggering 55% of educators were thinking of calling it quits. A Brown University study found teachers’ job satisfaction in 2022 hovered near its lowest level since the 1970s. Only more money has been shown to have the potential to fix things. . Teachers say they need better pay – to the tune of a minimum starting salary of $60,000 a year – along with stability in health and retirement benefits. And teachers want more say in what they teach. If these elements aren’t met for #teachers, schools will continue to lose their best educators. https://buff.ly/46lo8Us #education #schools #hiring #retention

Listening to #audiobooks – compared to just watching videos – allows kids (and us all) to develop better listening skills and strengthen the imagination. It’s a much less passive experience of the content. https://buff.ly/3WdK6Ep #lifehacks #pyschology

Years ago, researchers consulted on a study examining spiritual leaders’ well-being. “I was convinced there had been some sort of error when nearly 1/3 of the sample scored above the clinical cutoff for symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder – significantly higher than scores among military personnel after deployment.” But continued and updated research has confirmed the same findings. Spiritual leaders face immense rolls from burnout to trauma. The team is still learning in their research what really helps but has since developed an 8-week online program to support spiritual leaders’ well-being. Concerned about recent Supreme Court rulings? An accounting expert warns of potential risks for investors. Expect more efforts by firms to present their financial performance in the most glowing terms possible, knowing that it will be a lot slower and more costly for the SEC to enforce the law. https://buff.ly/4cP95ou #investments #investor #economy #law

Physics lessons taught in American classrooms (even if it’s actually taught) rarely highlight how physics can be applied to students’ everyday lives. Imagine if, instead, students could see how physics influences their daily lives in sports, extreme weather or baking and cooking. How might these real-world connections spark curiosity and foster a deeper understanding of physics? https://buff.ly/3xQc6pi #physics #science #teaching #education
Why US schools need to shake up the way they teach physics

Today, businesses owned by Black and Latino women get less than 1% of all venture capital funding. A US appeal court recently ruled that the Fearless Foundation – the charitable arm of the Fearless Fund venture capital firm – must suspend its Strivers Grant Contest. which awards grants to businesses owned by Black women. If this case gets to the Supreme Court, the justices will have to decide whether the need for efforts like the Fearless Fund that seek to level the playing field for Black women entrepreneurs outweigh the fact that a white woman might theoretically be rejected for the grant.
