Last week's field trip to São Paulo was incredibly enlightening for our MA Global Criminology students. This blog post will focus on the master's students' reflections from three prison visits in São Paulo. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Professor Shecaira, his colleagues, the students of the University of São Paulo Law School, and the participants of GDUCC and Nova Rota for warmly hosting us in São Paulo and crafting such an extraordinary agenda for our visit. We aspire to reciprocate this experience one day by welcoming you to the UK.
Empowering Exchanges: Reflecting on Day 2 in São Paulo After a restorative early night, our students rose energized and eager to dive into another exciting day in São Paulo! We kicked off with a meeting to gear up for our joint seminar with USP - Universidade de São Paulo Law School and University of Westminster's Global Criminology Masters Course. With our preparations ready, we enjoyed some free time to soak in the vibrant city vibes, explore markets, and admire the awe-inspiring beauty of the Catedral Metropolitana de São Paulo. The highlight of the evening was our joint seminar, where we proudly showcased our work in UK prisons while immersing ourselves in learning about the Nova Rota and O Grupo de Diálogo UniversidadeCárcere-Comunidade (GDUUC) projects. We were privileged to hear from students and former project participants, discovering firsthand the positive transformations these initiatives have brought to their education, careers, and lives. Our master's students shone brightly, delivering presentations that reflected their academic prowess and embodied the spirit of Westminster. A heartfelt thank you to Professor Shecaira, his remarkable colleagues, and the welcoming students for organising such a fantastic event. Here's to more fruitful collaborations ahead!
Sunshine and Study: Our Convict Criminology Masters Students Explore São Paulo! Greetings from the vibrant heart of Brazil! Our Global Criminology (Convict Criminology module) master's students have touched down in the sunny, spectacular city of São Paulo. And what a start to our adventure it has been! From the moment we arrived, São Paulo welcomed us with open arms and sunshine that matched the warmth of its people. Our day was packed with exploration and excitement as we ventured through the bustling streets, soaked in the lively atmosphere, and uncovered the hidden gems of this magnificent city. A highlight of our day was weaving through the vibrant markets of São Paulo. Each stall was a kaleidoscope of colours, smells, and sounds, offering everything from fresh fruits to handcrafted treasures. It was a sensory overload in the best possible way, and we couldn't help but indulge in the delicious local cuisine. The flavours were as rich and diverse as the city itself! But it wasn't all play; our journey is also one of learning and discovery. As we explored, we discussed the intricate tapestry of São Paulo's social and cultural dynamics, relating our observations to our comparative criminology studies.
