As summer 2024 comes to an end, I wanted to reflect on my summer internship at Coriell Institute for Medical Research! This internship experience truly made it my best summer yet! I joined Coriell with the goal of gaining hands-on wet lab experience, particularly in cell work, and I’m thrilled that’s exactly what I accomplished over the 10 weeks of my internship. The internship has been deeply enriching and filled with valuable learning opportunities. I had the privilege of working as a research intern in an epigenetics lab at the Camden Cancer Research Center under the mentorship of Dr. Mikel Ghelfi. My co-intern, Rachel Prutzman and I were responsible for maintaining our cell lines, monitoring their confluency every morning under the microscope, and ensuring they were ready for drug treatments. Throughout my internship, I performed a range of essential lab techniques, including cell maintenance (splitting, freezing, passaging, and media changes), cell treatment (seeding/plating in 96-well plates, cell counting, preparing drug stocks, and administering drug treatments), and analyzing experimental data using Incucyte. I also had the opportunity to perform DNA isolation and quantification with a nanodrop, as well as PCR and gel electrophoresis. This internship has been an incredible learning experience, and I’m excited to continue advancing in the field of research. I’m especially grateful to my mentor and supervisor, Dr. Mikel Ghelfi, for his exceptional guidance and training, and esteemed colleagues at Coriell, with whom I had the privilege to interact with. Overall, this internship has deepened my understanding of the research process and its potential as a career path. I’m thankful for the opportunity to learn critical lab techniques and work alongside distinguished researchers. I am proud to have interned at Coriell Institute for Medical Research this summer and am deeply grateful to the entire Coriell team for making this experience so rewarding and memorable!!

  • How does Gennaro Calendo, Associate Director of Bioinformatics at Coriell, describe bioinformatics to friends and family outside of the industry? "Usually I start with a question, 'How much do you know about DNA?' And then gauge how quickly their eyes glaze over and adjust my answer," he said. Gennaro and the rest of the bioinformatics are essential parts of the team at Coriell. He answered several questions about his work, including the one above at greater length, in this Q&A.
