A plaza dedicated and named in honor of Cornell’s 14th president, Martha E. Pollack, will be part of the new Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science building and complex, connecting it with Gates Hall. The Martha E. Pollack Plaza will be located “at the growing heart” of Cornell Bowers CIS, Kayser said. “It will be traversed by thousands, used every day, and will forever be a reminder of the contributions that [she] made: not just in computer science, but to the entire university.”

All students in Cornell Bowers have ambitious dreams for their future, but some of those dreams take a little extra help to come true. That's where the Dream Grants program comes in. Established by alumni Parag Tole, M.S. ’01, Ph.D. ‘03, and Adam Kravetz ’02, the Dream Grant fund is designed to "help students walk their own paths. Each semester, students can receive support to advance their dream, whether they want to develop an app, found a startup, or something entirely new. https://lnkd.in/g_2bTJ6D

Taking race into account when developing tools to predict a patient’s risk of colorectal cancer leads to more accurate predictions when compared with race-blind algorithms, new research finds. Emma Pierson, the Andrew H. and Ann R. Tisch Assistant Professor of computer science at the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute at Cornell Tech and Cornell Bowers, served as senior author on the study.

Researchers examined thousands of human-written college admissions essays and AI-generated ones, and found essays generated by #AI are most similar to essays authored by male students, with higher socioeconomic status and higher levels of social privilege. “We wanted to find out what these patterns that we see in human-written essays look like in a ChatGPT world,” said AJ Alvero, assistant research professor of information science. “If there is the strong connection with human writing and identity, how does that compare in AI-written essays?” #CornellAI
