M.ENG. ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Cornell Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Meet Vy Huynh, a proud member of Cornell University's historic 150th graduating class in Mechanical Engineering! This past May, Vy walked across the stage at commencement, marking the culmination of his rigorous studies in aerospace, aeronautical, and astronautical engineering.    In July, Vy embarked on an exciting new chapter as a Mechanical Engineer at Kaman Air Vehicles, where he specializes in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and stress analysis on their emerging helicopters. “My M.Eng. project involved modeling pollution over Anaheim, California using Ansys Fluent,” he revealed. “The expertise I gained in CFD was precisely what Kaman needed. Dear Colleagues:   Several of us are organizing a special section to celebrate the extraordinary life of Dr. Natalio Mingo during Symposium SF01-Thermal Transport in Materials of the 2025 MRS Spring Meeting. Among his many scientific accomplishments before he passed away recently, Dr. Mingo pioneered Green’s function calculation of phonon transport and led the creation of the widely used ShengBTE open-source code for first-principles calculation of phonon transport. His theoretical insights have lightened the journeys of many in the study of thermal transport in a wide range of functional materials. Abstracts are invited in topical areas that have been impacted by Dr. Mingo’s works, and can be submitted to Symposium SF01 (due Oct. 17) on the following MRS website. Please consider including "This presentation is in memory of Dr. Natalio Mingo" at the end of your abstract so we can organize these presentations in his special session.

The legacy of microscale robotics at Cornell continues to unfold – and refold and unfold itself again.  The latest addition is a robot less than 1 millimeter in size that is printed as a 2D hexagonal “metasheet” but, with a jolt of electricity, morphs into preprogrammed 3D shapes and crawls.

Very excited to have been honored with the 2023 Best Paper of the Year Award from the North American Actuarial Journal with Martin Eling and Mauro Elvedi for our work on the Economic Impact of Extreme Cyber Risk Scenarios. This was an exciting example of how multidisciplinary research can deliver considerable industry and academic impact where we quantified the economic losses from a variety of doomsday cyber scenarios...finding that they are all within the realm of insurability. This was especially critical research in the aftermath of the Crowdstrike incident. Thank you Society of Actuaries for this recognition for our international, multidisciplinary research.
