OFFICE FANTASY FOOTBALL 🏈 Every year, like clockwork, the end of summer brings fantasy football chatter. And every year, you feel out of place. You’ve never shown any interest—sports have never been your thing. You are more comfortable with spreadsheets than scoreboards, a square in every sense. You didn’t play sports in school, and you don’t even have a favorite sports team. In summary you’re a sportsballer. But you’ve always been told that building work relationships is key to climbing the corporate ladder, so you decide to join the office fantasy football league 💪 . What’s the worst that can happen..right?! Quickly, you realize it’s not just about picking players. No, you’ve signed up for a weekly babysitting gig, managing your team of overpaid athletes—just in case one of them gets injured in one of the most violent contact sports ever created. You also have to be quick with your fingers if someone in your league drops a player that you have been waiting patiently to pick up. As the season drags on, ..I mean…progresses, you lose every matchup 😔. Your go-to excuse? You weren’t paying enough attention. But your colleagues are judging you. To them, you’re the person who doesn’t take life—or, more importantly, their beloved football—seriously 😠. So, good luck trying to impress your colleagues and upper management. I WAS ON VACATION WHEN THAT HAPPENED Zack has been basking in the sun for two glorious weeks in Barbados 🏖 . Good for him! He probably deserved that vacation—after all, I think he's a decent worker from the little that I know about him. As the vacation comes to an end, Zack knows what awaits him: a container-sized inbox of unread emails 😟 . Zack does not have the luxury of a work colleague covering his inbox. Zack rolls into the office, but mentally, he's still on the beach drinking a cold beer 🙂 🍺. The guy can’t stop talking about his vacation, as if his job now is to make everyone else jealous. Oh, and let’s not forget his new favorite excuse: "Well, I was out when that happened, so I'm still playing catch-up." Convenient, right? Zack has mastered the art of using his vacation as a get-out-of-jail-free card for any complex task that comes his way. How long can Zack ride this post-vacation wave? Who knows. But as long as he can keep mentioning Barbados in every conversation, it looks like the excuse train isn’t stopping anytime soon. Beware Zack, annual performance reviews are around the corner! CEO ELECTIONS If a company does not practice CEO rotation, then a CEO could, in theory, cling to their throne... indefinitely (yikes!). 😞 Unless, of course, they’re caught with their hand in the cookie jar or repeatedly smashing the company’s Business Ethics Code like it’s a piñata. CEO longevity can be a blessing... or a curse. If the CEO is hitting goals and inspiring employees, it could be all rainbows, pay raises and even maybe bonuses. But if not? Well….buckle up! 🙂 🙃 Now, picture this: CEOs elected by their employees, complete with term limits tied to their performance. Five years into the role and—drumroll, please—if your rating is “Does Not Meet Expectations,” the clock starts ticking. Cue a new election! But let’s add some flair... why not make them debate each other? 🤔 Picture the top candidates on stage, battling it out over employee benefits, work-from-home policies, and who knows, maybe even better coffee or free snacks. Employees with the longest tenure? They get to choose the juiciest topics. It’s not a brand-new concept, but hey, no one's tried it on a grand scale yet. So, would you love to see a CEO sweat during an election season? 🤔 🙂 https://lnkd.in/edq8zr6Y

THE HORRORS OF STARTING A NEW JOB Ethan started his new job with a mix of excitement 🙂and nerves😨 —mostly nerves. On day one, his coworkers greeted him warmly, giving him a tour and assuring him they were there to help. He was relieved, but his stomach wasn’t. By mid-morning, he’d already taken three “bathroom breaks.” His nerves had a direct line to his digestive system. By day three, things started to shift. Ethan still had a lot of questions—there was hardly any documentation, and the products they supported were a mess. Customers called non-stop with complaints, and each time Ethan tried to ask for guidance, his coworkers seemed more annoyed. "Just check the knowledge base," they’d snap 😠, but the knowledge base was as empty as Ethan’s stomach after all those nervous bathroom trips. The days dragged on, each one more stressful than the last. Between the frustrated customers and his coworkers' growing impatience, Ethan found himself spending more time in the bathroom than at his desk. He wasn’t sure what was worse—the constant flow of complaints or the growing distance from his team. By week’s end, one thing was clear: the only thing welcoming him now was the bathroom stall. Happy National Work From Home Day🙂💻⌨️ Employees - You might not be face-to-face in the same room as your workmates but remember to build those work relationships and enjoy the perks of working from home. On the flip side, let's not ruin it for everyone by taking extra-long breaks or showing up for work late and/or logging off early. Employers - Offering remote jobs allows you to have a wider pool of talent to choose from, which is especially important for those start-up companies out there trying to create and deliver new innovative products. I used to work on planes. Every conference trip: Me. Laptop on the tray table. Typing like a madman. 👩💼 I grew up in East Asia, famed for its overwork culture. There was no such thing as work-life balance. There was only work-work-work-more-work. Then you work some more in your grave. "Hardworking" lauded as a virtue, hierarchical culture that prioritizes subordination and respect for authority, poor labor conditions... The psychological, sociocultural, economic factors have created the perfect storm of "Workism". 👩💼 What is Workism? It is the belief that work isn't only for production, but constitutes a central part of who you are (cf. Derek Thompson). Your work is your identity. Your work is your purpose. Your work is your life's meaning. 👩💼 Workism not only plagues East Asia. It has also become a central theme in American culture. Social psychologist Jeffrey Sanchez-Burks linked the roots of Workism to the Protestant work ethic (cf. Max Weber). The "Protestant" part of Protestant work ethic came from Puritanism/Calvinism. Calvinists think we're doomed except for a select few who are predetermined for being saved. But how do you know you belong to the select few? The only way to know is if you work really hard because that's supposed to be a manifestation of the faith you have received. This becomes a mental trap. Everyone wants to be the select few. So everyone works harder and harder than everyone else. This mentality also greatly benefited capitalist exploitation. 👩💼 Fortunately, the tide is turning. Research shows GenZs are working less, rethinking priorities in life, and unprecedentedly rich at this stage in their lives compared to Millennials and Boomers. Rather than contorting themselves into rigid careers and working until 65, GenZs asked: How exactly is this job serving my career? How is my career serving what I want in life? GenZs stopped putting their livelihood into the hands of corporations and started forging a path of their own. 👩💼Anyway, this is me now👇, a millennial joining the Gen Z club. If you ever catch me on a plane, say hi to Sunglass Bear 😎 💬 Do you work on planes?
