Deba Souko’s family has farmed their small plot in Mali for generations, but extreme weather — long droughts followed by floods — and rising prices have made it hard to produce enough food. “These times are difficult,” Deba says. “Eating three times a day is not a certainty.” As a result, her grandson Aliou became critically ill. Previously an active toddler, Aliou couldn’t even walk. Community child health volunteers found that Aliou had severe acute malnutrition. Deba’s family was referred to Corus organization Lutheran World Relief’s project selling food and fertilizer at reduced prices to more than 1,200 households in need in the Ségou Region of Mali. After accessing a kit that included fertilizer, millet and rice, Aliou saw great improvement. Deba is hopeful that next year’s harvest will be much improved with the fertilizer, improving the family’s livelihood and preventing future malnutrition. Deba is not alone. The Sahel region of Africa is facing a devastating crisis fueled by conflict, extreme poverty and climate change. With millions displaced across Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, nearly one million children under age five are at risk of severe wasting in the Sahel. We are dedicated to combating malnutrition and supporting livelihoods throughout the Sahel by enhancing climate resilience and improving food security. On this World Food Day, let’s join together to ensure no one goes hungry. https://lnkd.in/e9B7h8mS #WorldFoodDay #Mali #Sahel #Malnutrition #Livelihoods #Nutrition #Resilience #FoodSecurity

On this International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, we're proud to highlight our ongoing work through the second phase of our Strengthening of Community-Based Structures for Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation (SOS) project. Implemented by Corus organization Lutheran World Relief and funded by Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies (MACP), we are empowering local communities to enhance disaster preparedness and response, building climate resilience and safeguarding lives. Recently, the project team, in collaboration with the Costa Rican and Salvadorean Red Cross, hosted the inaugural Regional Learning Workshop on Early Actions for Risk Management. This event convened producer organizations from Peru, Guatemala, and Nicaragua, alongside educational institutions from Honduras and local partners such as Fundación Campo to help them prepare for the forecasted heavy hurricane season. It provided an invaluable opportunity to exchange insights on community-based risk management initiatives and their link to development efforts in the cocoa, coffee, and education sectors. Meet some of the incredible workshop participants in the photos below. Through their local leadership, communities and cooperatives are better prepared for disaster risks and climate challenges. #InternationalDayforDisasterRiskReduction #DRR #CommunityResilience

📢 Tomorrow is International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, and we in the Corus family feel DRR is so critical for community resilience that we'll be marking the day twice. ⚠️ Natural disasters are unfortunately not uncommon in Nepal with flooding being an annual occurrence. This past September, central and eastern Nepal experienced catastrophic flooding that resulted in many deaths, the displacement of thousands of people, significant damage to infrastructure, and major disruption to livelihoods. Narayan Gyawali, PhD., our Nepal program director, leads Corus organization Lutheran World Relief's transboundary flood resilience programming and DRR work in Nepal. Following the disaster, Dr. Gyawali spoke up about what DRR failures and gaps led to such loss and what lessons should be learned from this experience. 📰 Read op-ed: https://bit.ly/486xtAl 🎙️ Read interview: https://lnkd.in/ePGhM_jf [Pictured: Monsoon rains caused flooding along the India-Nepal border in 2019.] #InternationalDayforDisasterRiskReduction #DRR #CommunityResilience

In Sierra Leone, girls are in crisis. One-third leave school by age 12. One in three marries before adulthood. One quarter are pregnant by 19. And 86% have undergone female genital mutilation. In a country where 57% of people live in poverty, young girls are trapped in a cycle of hardship and missed opportunity. Nearly half of women have never attended school at all. This figure rises to 69% among women from the poorest households. Why? In large part, it’s because poverty and a lack of education are a vicious cycle. Changemakers like Dr. Olive Musa are committed to breaking this cycle. Dr. Musa, the Director of Non-formal Education at the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education in Sierra Leone, and her dedicated team focus on reaching the out-of-school population, especially girls, through community learning centers. Her efforts to overcome barriers such as poverty, child marriage, teenage pregnancy, and lack of access to education by providing essential literacy and job skills training are transforming lives and communities. On this International Day of the Girl Child, and every day, we are committed to supporting girls alongside inspiring partners like Dr. Musa. Will you join us? https://lnkd.in/eyx-wVKd #SierraLeone #InternationalDayGirlChild #Girls #GirlsEducation #Education #EmpowerGirls #Changemakers

💡 Corus organization Lutheran World Relief promotes mental health support by providing information and professional guidance to young people in Honduras who need it most. Last year, we launched EmpleandoMentes, a digital platform designed to address topics such as emotional intelligence, mental illness, emotional support, soft skills and more. 🚀 Through the platform, we ran the "Proyectate SaludableMente" contest which engaged youth in conversations about the importance of mental health. Youth aged between 15 and 29 created powerful 30-second videos to communicate important messages about mental and emotional health, resilience, and the importance of seeking professional help when needed. 💪 Dayana Aguirre, one of the inspiring winners of the video contest, shared her reflections on the experience: “The impact it leaves on me is that we should never be silent when going through a problem. Always talk to other people. Don't feel like they can't hear you. And never give up on yourself.” 🌟 Together, let's raise awareness and prioritize mental health! 🌍✨ What more can we do to truly support the socioeconomic integration of migrant and refugee populations in Peru? This question sparked meaningful dialogue among 17 organizations at "A Breakfast for Integration," organized by Corus organization Lutheran World Relief with support from the International Rescue Committee, Encuentros Servicio Jesuita a Migrantes and Equilibrium Social Development Consulting. The event featured a presentation on a study about the labor market for Venezuelan migrants and refugees, which set the stage for a rich discussion on the challenges and opportunities we face in promoting integration for all in Peru. Let’s work together for a more inclusive future! Learn more: https://lnkd.in/efwsCDgP #Peru #Refugees #Migrants #Migration #LaborIntegration #Inclusion
