As summer comes to an end, we’re sharing some of our Costco IT employee adventures! Meet Addison Williams, manager of product management and platform enablement for Costco IT Travel. He joined Costco in May 2018. Between May and September, Addison climbed 17 of his intended 21 North Cascade peaks! That’s over 80,000 feet of elevation gain and about 230 miles of hiking. So Addison, who did you climb with?  “I traveled solo on my excursions. The intent was to create a challenge to provoke physical and mental development. There’s nothing quite like being pinched in an avalanche shoot between cornices threatening to collapse above you, and an audible black bear several yards into the woods on the other side to make you feel small, alone and vulnerable! But also, these scary circumstances can be overcome with a bit of awareness, intentionality and speed.” What was your favorite part?  “Hands down: the learning! I spent hundreds of hours in isolation facing dangers, evaluating what life meant to me, my priorities and values. I got to practice being disciplined, forcing myself out of bed at 2 a.m. to get to the mountains before dawn when I only wanted to stay in my safe, warm and comfortable cocoon. I climbed in rain, snow and windstorms all for the sake of the goal, and inch by inch, I saw it approach. After the eighth summit on Big Four Mountain, I wasn’t certain I wanted to continue the challenge. The hike had taken 22 hours. I'd found myself in a series of life-threatening circumstances where I was forced to remain calm and make good decisions to extricate myself from high ledges hundreds of feet above large rocks and glaciers. But while some moments were hard and terrifying, others brought a new type of happiness like when I summited Whitehorse Mountain. I left my tent near the So-Bahli-Alhi Glacier at 3 a.m. to traverse across the snow and ice while it was coldest and most firm. I arrived at the base of the summit block which was separated from the glacier by a deep dark crevasse. Equipped with an ice ax and crampons, I climbed up the 70-foot face of mixed rock, snow and ice, putting the dangers out of my mind. When I pulled myself over the lip of the summit block as the sun rose, it brought tears of relief and a profound sense of accomplishment that I’ll never forget. This became a catalyst, a boost in confidence that made me feel that my goal was achievable.” Where are you going next?  “This set of experiences had a somewhat spiritual nature that I don’t think I’ll ever be able to convey. But now I dream of doing bigger, more technically challenging climbs that might unlock something even deeper. I believe that climbing in Chilean Patagonia, epic peaks like Cero Torre or Fitz Roy might grant that. And if one lesson dominated any other this summer, it’s that I can achieve anything if I’m disciplined and committed to it.” #costco #CostcoIT #CostcoTravel #CostcoITEmployeespotlight #summervacations

As we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, we’d like to introduce you to JD Gonzalez! JD joined Costco in May 2023, and he’s a senior software engineer on the Central Engineering team. So, JD, what does National Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you? “National Hispanic-Latino Heritage Month is a deeply meaningful celebration for me, as it represents a cherished part of my identity and heritage. As a first-generation American, I have a profound appreciation for the rich culture, values and traditions passed down to me by my parents, who were born and raised in Mexico. This annual observance serves as a powerful reminder of my roots and the sacrifices my family made to build a better life for future generations. I take immense pride in being able to share this heritage with my own children, ensuring they never forget the foundations that shaped who I am today. I reflect on the resilience, determination and deep sense of community that are core to Hispanic and Latino cultures. These qualities have been cornerstones in my own life, inspiring me to work hard, stay true to my principles and support those around me." How do you celebrate? “Reconnecting with my relatives, testing traditional meals and passing on traditions to the younger generation is at the heart of how I commemorate this special time. It's a chance to reaffirm my sense of identity, honor my family's legacy, and ensure that the values and customs so important to me continue to be celebrated for years to come … Whether it's attending lively community events or simply enjoying precious moments with loved ones, this month is a time for me to celebrate who I am and where I come from. It's a time of deep personal significance, strengthening my connection to my roots and reaffirming my pride in my heritage.” Lastly, who has been the biggest influence in your life?  “Without a doubt, the individual who has had the most profound and lasting influence on my life is my mother. She is the embodiment of selfless, unwavering love and determination — qualities that have profoundly shaped who I am today. Throughout my upbringing, I witnessed my mother's relentless work ethic and willingness to make innumerable sacrifices for the wellbeing of our family. The sheer magnitude of the trials and tribulations she has overcome, and would gladly face again for my sake, is truly breathtaking to me. Her resilience in the face of adversity has been a constant source of inspiration.” #costco #costcoit #costcoitemployeespotlight #nationalhispaniclatinoheritagemonth

They were inspired to visit after watching “Yellowstone” on TV and doing some research on the area. So Emily, what was your favorite part?  “The most wonderful part was a mix of the beautiful naturescapes and the time we spent in Jackson Hole, WY going to the rodeo.” Where are you going next? “We’re planning a group trip to Zion National Park next year. But my dream vacation would definitely be a multi-country trip to Europe with a stopover in Iceland. I fully expect to accomplish both at some point in my tenure here at Costco Travel!” #costco #CostcoIT #CostcoTravel #CostcoITEmployeespotlight #summervacations
