Meet our June Plant of the Month: the Dwarf Sugar Palm! 🌴 Here are some fun facts about this versatile beauty: 🌴 It produces both male and female flowers that are colorful and sweet-smelling, adding a touch of charm to any space. 🌴 The sugar comes from the palm heart, which is used in some Asian cultures to make palm sugar. 🌴 It’s a suckering species, meaning it can send up new growth at its base, allowing it to potentially live forever. 🌴 It is extremely hardy and can survive even in chilly winters. 🌴 And let’s not forget its air-purifying qualities—making it an excellent choice for urban gardens!

Nicole Plunkett, ASLA, PLA, AICP, a partner at Cotleur & Hearing, Alex Ahrenholz of JMorton, and Hayden Bertone, a landscape architecture student at the University of Florida, recently visited their alma mater, the Jupiter Environmental Research and Field Studies Academy (JERFSA) at Jupiter Community High School. Their visit with the senior students served as a platform to offer career guidance and share stories from their professional journeys in landscape architecture and land planning. The JERFSA program at Jupiter Community High School is a four-year magnet program which caters to students interested in integrating environmental studies with their academic pursuits. Cotleur & Hearing’s interaction with these aspiring environmental professionals highlights the firm’s commitment to bridging the gap between industry expertise and academic pursuit. With Summer on our doorstep, it’s time to start preparing for our big summer plans. Our May Plant of the Month, the Giant Yarey Palm, could be the biggest plan of them all for your landscape. This Imposing yet elegant Palm from Cuba is enormous. The fronds can span over 6’ wide and boast a striking blue to silver-green color. Its numerous fronds are densely arranged to create a distinct rounded crown on top of its robust trunk of a light gray color. The waxy leaf blades are divided into 120 stiff segments that create a mesmerizing symmetrical pattern against the sky. The sheer size and combined attributes of the Giant Yarey Palm produce a truly awe-inspiring sight to behold. Endangered in the wild of its native habitat in Cuba, the Giant Yarey Palm adapts well to South Florida conditions. Once established, this slow growing palm is drought tolerant, moderately salt tolerant, and thrives in full sun conditions. While its tall, impressive stature is the characterized appearance of this palm, it looks fantastic sized down as a younger specimen mixed into the landscape. Just be sure to allow plenty of room for it to grow and mature into the unparalleled behemoth it is known to become. Make room in your schedule (and landscape) this may for the Giant Yarey Palm. - Christian Brewer
