About us

Made up of the fifteen municipalities on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, the County of Barnstable was founded in 1685 and is one of the oldest Counties in the United States. The County of Barnstable is a special place, requiring special protection and special services managed cooperatively for the benefit of each community. This narrow land has a unique place in the national historical narrative and has been defined by the limitations and expanses of land and water. Cape Cod has always had one foot in the past and one foot in the future. The County of Barnstable focuses its attention on regional issues and resources that impact our coastal waters, environment, and public health and safety. We work hard to develop programs that educate and inform our residents. Our departments are vibrant and active across the Cape and beyond, providing information, support, and advocacy for environmental issues, technology innovation, emergency preparedness, and more. • What does AmeriCorps Cape Cod do in August with no members? 🤔 ACC Staff usually has about four weeks to turn the program on its head to get ready for the new group! This includes end-of-year tasks like cleaning the program residences, monitoring the vehicles, and finishing off recruitment. After the new staff has arrived, objectives switch to training and prepping for member arrival, but they still find time for fun! Photos from a new art installation at the Route 6 Yarmouth Rest Area (artist Sarah Thornington and CARE for the Cape & Islands, Inc) and their meeting with CEO of AmeriCorps Michael Smith on Martha's Vineyard. Countdown to member move-in is 7️⃣days! #GettingThingsDone #Year26Incoming

  • Happy Carnival Week everyone! 🎉 Barnstable County Department of Health and Environment’s Emergency Planning Division works alongside many other local and state partners to keep Cape Cod’s residents and visitors safe and sound during Provincetown’s annual Carnival celebration! It takes a village or, in this case, a region! In this pic (or 'safety selfie' as we like to call it), Emergency Preparedness Director Chip Reilly and Mass Maritime Intern Elias Higgins are hard at work coordinating assets to make the day safe for all. The 46th Annual Parade Carnival Parade takes place later today! #capecodgov #provincetown #preparedness

  • Guess who’s out there making life better on Cape Cod? Extension’s dynamic duo, Kari Parcell and Bryan McCormack, rocked the Chatham Conservation Foundation’s Environmental Fair, teaching folks how to slim down their trash, recycle like pros, and get storm-ready to protect our beautiful Cape from floods! Meanwhile, Sue Bourque took her nutrition know-how to Provincetown’s Council on Aging, serving up a healthy strawberry spinach salad with budget-friendly tips for buying local Cape Cod produce. These events are the backbone of what Extension does best—keeping Cape Cod healthy, safe, and sustainable!

  • This morning, the Barnstable County Department of Human Services hosted the 2024 Overdose Awareness flag and lawn sign event, a solemn and meaningful tribute to the lives lost to substance use disorder. On the grounds of the Barnstable Superior Courthouse, 72 purple flags were placed, each representing a cherished Cape Codder who lost their life last year to the ongoing tragedy of substance use disorder. This poignant display serves as a stark reminder of the impact this crisis has on our community, the families who mourn, and the urgent need for continued advocacy and resources. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in today’s event. Your unwavering support and commitment to raising awareness are vital as we work together to prevent further loss and ensure access to the mental health and substance use resources that are so desperately needed.

  • The Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Test Center at Barnstable County's Department of Health and Environment says: It's Terminology Tuesday, and we're launching a 4-part series on nitrogen. Nitrogen (N) is a gas that makes up 78% of our atmosphere and is essential for plant growth. However, it's also a significant water pollutant, contributing to harmful algal blooms and "dead zones" in marine environments. Learn more here: https://loom.ly/JibUN6E
