A global journalism initiative committed to more urgent and informed coverage of climate change.
About us
Covering Climate Now collaborates with journalists and newsrooms to produce more informed and urgent climate stories, to make climate a part of every beat in the newsroom — from politics and weather to business and culture — and to drive a public conversation that creates an engaged public. Mindful of the media’s responsibility to inform the public and hold power to account, we advise newsrooms, share best practices, and provide reporting resources that help journalists ground their coverage in science while producing stories that resonate with audiences. Co-founded by the Columbia Journalism Review and The Nation in association with The Guardian and WNYC in 2019, CCNow’s 460-plus partners include some of the biggest names in news, and some of the smallest, because this story needs everyone. In addition to three of the world’s biggest news agencies — Reuters, Bloomberg, and Agence France Presse — each of which provides content to thousands of other newsrooms, our partners include CBS News, NBC and MSNBC News, Noticias Telemundo, PBS NewsHour, Univision, Al Jazeera; most of the biggest public radio stations in the US; many flagship newspapers and TV networks in the Americas, Europe, and Asia; and dozens of leading magazines and journals, including Nature, Scientific American, Rolling Stone, HuffPost, Teen Vogue, and Mother Jones. Since two devastating hurricanes brought death and destruction across the southeastern US, the response from the presidential candidates, the media, and voters has been deafening. Headlines screamed that the future of the planet was on the ballot November 5. Candidates raced to be the first to share their plans for a climate-safe future. The fight against climate change dominated the election conversation. Record scratch. In reality, none of that happened. As Grist pointed out in its excellent climate stakes round-up (which is free to republish on any news site), perhaps the biggest October surprise “may be that not even the hurricanes have pushed concerns about climate change more toward the center of the presidential campaign.” https://lnkd.in/gdkk4cXa Read more in today's edition of #ClimateOnTheBallot. #elections2024 #politics #journalism #news #climatechange

If you're a journalist/editor/newsroom covering hurricanes Helene and Milton, we're hosting a virtual get-together for you on October 24: https://lnkd.in/epbcRtNj We'll exchange experiences, hear tips from other journalists and meteorologists, and access resources to improve your reporting on extreme weather disasters. We know how tough it’s been—especially for news orgs that aren’t used to devastation of this extent. This is uncharted territory for many, and we at CCNow, in partnership with NATAS Southeast Chapter, want to create this space to support one another as we navigate the challenges of covering such storms.
Welcome! You are invited to join a meeting: CCNow Forum: Covering the Aftermath of Helene and Milton. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the meeting.

War’s massive carbon footprint fuels hurricanes like Helene and Milton. Journalism can play an important role in getting out the message about how climate change and war reinforce one another and, perhaps, how they might be defused. With the US election less than a month away, we're digging into Donald Trump's climate record with The Washington Post reporter Maxine Joselow and The Guardian correspondent Oliver Milman. Donald Trump withdrew from the Paris Agreement as one of his first acts as president in 2017, pulling the US back from global cooperation on climate action. During his time as US president, he attacked and undermined climate and environmental regulation, called climate change a "hoax" and cozied up to fossil fuel interests, which he's continued to do as he campaigns for a second term. What would a second Trump term look like for US climate policy and what could it mean for global action on climate? What can Project 2025 tell us about what, if elected, Trump would do? Join us virtually on October 16 at 12pm ET. RSVP: https://lnkd.in/eMcwRY9W #webinar #talkingshop #politics #elections2024 #climatechange
