#AskCowen: Can you rezone a property? Whether you want to rezone a commercial property to a residential one or residential property to a commercial structure, rezoning is done all the time for various reasons. Whether you found an old church that you feel would make an incredible home or a home that you’d like to make a business, it can be done. Is it easy? To put it simply, not really. Have a zoning question? When you partner with Cowen, our Preconstruction Team can assist with site analysis, zoning, budget development, materials and systems studies, and much more. When we get involved during the inception stage, our knowledge and experience can be used to secure lower costs and a smoother construction experience for our clients.

Let's take it all the way back for this #WaybackWednesday. To the very beginning of Cowen, back in 1896. It all started with five Cowen brothers who began working their way West by working on the railroad in the late 1800's. All five brothers were stonemasons and in addition to laying track on the railroad would apply their stonemason skills at each town where the new railroad would put a depot. During the journey one of the brothers, Nathan (Link) met his future bride in Arkansas. Nathan stayed behind in Arkansas to court his new bride. Once he and his bride were ready to resume the trek West, they hitched their cow to a covered wagon and set out to catch up with the railroad as it continued West. They made it as far as the new town of Shawnee in Indian territory, but the train and the other brothers had already moved on. Needing a break and some money, Nathan took a job in the new town building a small house for a family. Nathan quickly realized there was a demand for his craft and money to be made building in this new territory. There began Cowen Construction in 1896.
