Many years ago, when our children (Emma & Jon) were young, we traveled in a houseboat up The Rideau Canal! It was a great trip that had us lazily meandering our way through the Canadian countryside, stopping for the night at riverside inns in small villages. When we took breaks, the kid’s loved jumping off the bow of the boat into shiny little swimming holes we found along the way. If you’ve never taken a trip like this, I highly encourage it -- with your kid’s or otherwise -- as it’s a real memory maker! Speaking of memories, that is the point of this story! Being the consummate Ad Man that I am, even on vacation I can’t stop thinking about the business, you know what I mean? So, as we were floating – downstream, I guess – a sign caught my eye: Why wouldn’t it, given that we were in the middle of nowhere and miles from the nearest anything. To start, I couldn't make out what it said -- but it sure got my attention. As I got closer, with the noon sun beating down on me and the sign alike, it became clear what it said... And I had to chuckle: “Americans are drinking Canada Dry! What a great line! To this day, the Cowley pantry has at least eight six-packs of Canada Dry waiting for our consumption. Don’t get me wrong: I’m not saying that just because I saw this great sign some 20 plus years ago on that sun-baked river’s edge, that’s the sole reason the Cowley’s drink Canada Dry. However, everyone in our family knows down deep in our hearts that THAT LINE – linked with THOSE FOND MEMORIES – surely has been a factor! Always thinking...
