About us
CPI Foundation (The Concrete Preservation Institute) is a nationwide non-profit foundation that serves as an official U.S. military active-duty Career Skills Program/SkillBridge provider, partner of the National Park Service, and partner of greater construction-industry companies to provide internship opportunities and hire our participants. CPI is helping more veterans transition every year, while preserving some of our nation’s most important historical sites. CPI has 2 programs: a hands-on Field School and an Industry Internship. With three 12-week sessions per year, our Field School is located in Golden Gate NRA, one of our country's most utilized national parks. GGNRA faces similar deferred maintenance issues that plague much of the US's aging infrastructure, which offers ideal training projects for our program. CPI completes various construction-related Park projects that may not otherwise be undertaken, preserving iconic structures and increasing access for staff and visitors. We are a full-time, continuous stewardship force bringing expertise, peoplepower, and industry leading technology to the Park. Our Industry Internship program is individually tailored, matching service members with industry companies where each service member plans to live & work, post military service. The outcome is beneficial for both service members and the partnering companies, allowing skills & experience to be gained while companies get to know the participant before hiring; the end goal results in permanent employment in a great fitting role - a win for all involved! Active duty service members transitioning out from all branches of the military may apply to our programs. All participants gain an understanding of how their military experience can lead to rewarding, lifelong careers in the growing and critical sector of the U.S. economy responsible for designing, building, and maintaining structures and infrastructure.

🌟 Career Training Program Success: Meet Cody Hartman 🌟 We're excited to share the journey of Cody Hartman, a former Air Force service member who found a new career path through CPI's career training program. Cody's story is a shining example of the seamless transition CPI facilitates for those moving from military service to the civilian workforce. “In the military, we train and pick up a lot of skills, but it can be difficult to leverage those skills transitioning to the civilian world. CPI shows you how your military experience can translate to a career in construction. They teach you hands-on industry knowledge and connect you with companies who value military experience and the leadership qualities you possess.” - Cody 🛠️ From Air Force to Field Engineer Cody served with distinction in the Air Force, where he developed highly valued skills in construction. Following his completion of our career training program, CPI connected Cody with HENSEL PHELPS, one of the leading construction firms in the country. 🏗️ A New Chapter in the Rocky Mountains During his time in the program, Cody's ability to manage complex projects and lead on the ground was quickly recognized. His hard work led to his acceptance of a full-time position as a Field Engineer with Hensel Phelps in the Rocky Mountain region. “I was hired as a field engineer with limited knowledge of the industry. But as I look at it, it’s similar in many ways to what I’ve learned in the military. I direct and coordinate with subcontractors on daily tasks to keep with the long-term schedule, handle problems as they arise, and, when needed, motivate individuals to meet schedule deadlines. The industry knowledge comes with time, but the leadership lessons those in the military have been ingrained with are invaluable to the industry.” - Cody 🌟 Building a Future Cody's transition to a civilian career in construction showcases CPI's commitment to supporting our trainees every step of the way—from skill translation and career training to full-time employment. His success underscores the value of our program in opening doors for servicemembers into rewarding post-service careers. 🔗 Launch Your Career with CPI Are you ready to transition into a fulfilling civilian career? 🍂 Throwback to Fall 2023: Warden’s House Stabilization - Phase 1 🍂 Last fall, participants of the National Park/Alcatraz Island Field Training Program undertook a crucial project—Phase 1 of the Warden's House stabilization. This portion of the project put trainees’ practical skills to the test, bringing together much of what they learned during their time at Alcatraz. 🏚️ Focus on Stabilization The Warden’s House is a historic structure that requires meticulous attention to detail and provides a perfect setting for our trainees to apply their skills. The structure endured significant damage from a fire in 1970, and Phase 1 of the project focused on stabilizing the existing framework, ensuring that the integrity of the building was maintained while preparing for further stabilization work. 📚 Learning and Growth The Warden’s House project allowed trainees to deeply engage with the challenges of preserving a national landmark. They learned valuable lessons in structural stabilization, historic preservation, and project management—skills that are highly transferable and sought after in the construction industry. 🌟 Continued Excellence The commitment shown by our participants during this project not only contributed to the preservation of a piece of history but also reinforced CPI’s mission to train and prepare service members and their families for successful civilian careers throughout the construction industry. 🔗 Discover More Interested in the intersection of history and hands-on training?
