The DOL Job Corps campus is complete.     CPLA developed the campus plan and site design for this beautiful project in Gulfport, MS. The site is an exemplary model for green infrastructure. Working closely with Brown, Mitchell & Alexander, Inc. on the site grading, our team found ways to repurpose the aesthetic landscape as stormwater infiltration opportunities through bioswales and terraced forms. This dual-purpose site design presents moments throughout the campus for students to gather in outdoor seating areas. An outdoor classroom anchors one corner of the central greenspace, overlooking an ellipse lawn area.     The buildings, designed by EGH Architects preserve the historic facades of uninhabited school buildings on the site, and have breathed new life into them as a state-of-the-art workforce development facility.     Under the leadership of Roy Anderson Corporation Roy Anderson Corp as the project’s general contractor, the site came together with the fine craftsmanship of Gulf Breeze Landscaping and Landmark Contracting.

The Lauderdale County Government Center is a stunning combination of modern forms in the architecture and landscape.     CPLA provided planning and design services for the site, to ensure that the hardscape and landscape complimented the clean lines of this large government building (designed by LPK Architects, PA). Careful attention was given to the vehicular and pedestrian circulation and spaces within the site. Our firm is grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of this project.

Happy Birthday to our very own, Patricia Hughes! Patricia, or “P” as we call her, has been a valued leader on our team for nearly seven years. She is a LEED accredited professional with a strong background in sustainable projects. Throughout her career, Patricia has worked with the foremost leaders in architecture and development and brings a wealth of wisdom to the CPLA family. In addition to assisting with project management, Patricia relishes in her role as CPLA “task master,” keeping our team focused deadlines and responsibilities. When she is not emailing “to do” lists, Patricia enjoys playing with her dogs, traveling with her husband, and spending time with her family. Happy Birthday, P! We couldn’t do what we do without you! #GOAT

Happy Birthday to our Rural Studio Director - Matthew Pea! Matthew has over a decade of experience in the design and implementation of beautiful spaces and places. With a landscape architecture degree from Mississippi State University and a contracting background, Matthew can develop plan sets that thoroughly communicate the design intent. In the South, small towns are prevalent, and in a rural state like Mississippi, they are everywhere. Just like larger cities, towns need planning and design assistance to sustain themselves. Matthew has a passion to see the resurgence of the great Southern town and enjoys helping municipalities capitalize on their potential. From our office on Main Street in the heart of downtown Ackerman, MS, (pop. 1,536) Matthew manages a strong relationship with the Department of Landscape Architecture at MSU in nearby Starkville, MS where one or two CPLA Fellowship team members are selected annually to gain real world experience by working in our Rural Studio throughout the academic year. When he is not marking up plans, meeting with clients, or educating our team, Matthew can typically be found sheering sheep, getting his jeep stuck or prepping his dove field for the big Labor Day Hunt.

Congratulations to Cory Gallo, a Mississippi State landscape architecture professor honored as a new fellow with a national professional society in recognition of exceptional accomplishments throughout his career. Cory Gallo, who also is assistant dean of MSU’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and assistant director of the university’s Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, has been elected to the American Society of Landscape Architects’ Council of Fellows. Members are selected based on their contributions to the landscape architecture field. Gallo said his involvement with MSU and the broader landscape architecture community has been meaningful to him. “I was nominated for my work as an educator in landscape architecture, which has been an incredible journey,” Gallo said. “Working with students on service-learning projects has been the most meaningful aspect of my teaching career. The design-build program allows MSU students to design something for the community and then install that design, which helps improve the quality of life for those community members.” Anne Spafford, professor and head of MSU’s Department of Landscape Architecture, said it’s a prestigious honor to be on the Council of Fellows. “Induction to the Council of Fellows of the American Society of Landscape Architects is one of the highest honors the profession bestows in recognition of exceptional accomplishments over a sustained period of time,” Spafford said. “The induction of Cory Gallo is extremely well-deserved, and we could not be prouder of him. Cory spearheaded the immensely successful design-build aspect of our program. “You can see examples of his design-build studio projects around campus and Starkville at the MSU Department of Landscape Architecture courtyard, MSU Community Garden, Starkville Public Library and Oktibbeha County Heritage Museum. His work, however, is spread across the U.S., as models of creative and beautiful means of sustainable stormwater management, fabrication techniques and community food systems,” Spafford said.
