About us
The Craft Emergency Relief Fund (CERF+) serves craft artists by providing education programs, advocacy, network building, and emergency relief. CERF+ was started by artists for artists as a grassroots mutual aid effort in 1985 and has since emerged as the leading nonprofit organization that uniquely focuses on supporting craft artists’ livelihoods throughout the U.S. and U.S. territories. After a career-threatening emergency, CERF+ provides direct and timely assistance to craft artists so that they can recover and get back to work as soon as possible. Since it was founded, CERF+ has provided almost $2 million in financial assistance and more than $400,000 in donated services to professional artists in craft disciplines nationwide.

CERF+ is closed today, October 14, in honor of Indigenous People's Day. We celebrate the invaluable contributions of Indigenous peoples and their inherent sovereignty, recognizing that they were here long before the colonization of the Americas. CERF+ staff will return to the office Tuesday, October 15. If there is an emergency that requires immediate attention, please text CERF+ Executive Director, Ruby Lopez Harper, at (614) 806-5880.

Just a reminder to the artists affected by the hurricanes that the new FEMA rule changes can assist craft artists and other entrepreneurs seeking federal assistance after disasters. Specifically, the new rule change –Simplifying Assistance for Entrepreneurs– allows FEMA to provide self-employed survivors with some initial financial support to replace disaster-damaged tools and equipment, or other items required for a specific trade or profession. This rule change would never have happened without the many years of dedicated work by former CERF+ executive director Cornelia Carey and former CERF+ Advisor on Policy and Government Relations Craig Nutt. We are deeply grateful to Cornelia and Craig for their persistence. https://lnkd.in/eXNbhFZA

Applications for CERF+ Get Ready Grants for Craft Artists are now open. These CERF+ grants provide up to $1,000 to individual artists working in craft disciplines to carry out activities that will help secure their studios, protect their businesses, plan their legacies, and prepare for emergencies. September is also National Preparedness Month, so it's a great time to apply for our Get Ready Grant today! These grants are made possible thanks to the generous contribution of all our donors, especially the Kresge Foundation, the Maxwell/Hanrahan Foundation, and the Windgate Foundation. The deadline to apply is October 29, 2024. Photo: Fiber artist Meenakshi Jha is based in St. Louis, Missouri and recently received a CERF+ Get Ready Grant to upgrade her studio furniture. “The new portable table, studio chair, power tool kit and electric scissors help me take better care of my body and avoid further medical expenses. I deeply appreciate this grant to help me make my working conditions better and safer for my mind and current financial condition.” -Meenakshi Jha https://lnkd.in/dKYWW2H
