Shortly after Tom Einhouse joined the maintenance staff at Playhouse Square Foundation in 1980, he was repairing something — he cannot recall exactly what because staff often fixed many things then — and asked if there were any nails available. He was presented with a can of nails, all rusty. "I thought, 'Is this the best we can do?' " Einhouse recalled. In those days, a few years after a community outcry saved two of the theaters from demolition, the quest to restore Cleveland's 1920s vintage theaters was low-budget stuff. Today, as Einhouse is set to retire at year's end as vice president of facilities and maintenance, the nonprofit is in a far different place than where he started 44 years ago. The organization now has a $93 million annual budget, five artfully restored historic theaters with busy schedules and a ranking as the nation's second-largest performing arts center.
