A new study finds that students in public school pre-K who attend a different school for kindergarten are at risk for poorer academic performance in early elementary grades, although switching to a school of higher quality may partly mitigate those risks. The study, whose lead author is Jordan E. Greenburg, followed students in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Exposure to social diversity in early childhood as the brain is developing, such as attending child care or early childhood education, enables individuals later in life to learn to see beyond social stereotypes, according to recent research from the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition, and Behaviour at Radboud University in the Netherlands. “This (early exposure to diversity) results in a heightened sensitivity to the nuances of those they are engaging with,” said senior author Arjen Stolk, now in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Dartmouth College.
