RIVERFRONT REVITALIZATION -- Yesterday marked the end of construction -- and a new beginning -- for the City of North Augusta, S.C., and the continuing development of its waterfront along the Savannah River as a tourist destination. The city held dignitary ribbon-cuttings for both its newly expanded Sharon Jones Amphitheater and new public boat docks adjacent to SRP Park and the city's Greeneway trail system to celebrate the completion of construction. CRANSTON, led by civil engineers Tom Dunaway and Penland Mayson, along with landscape architect Lance Cheely, provided civil and structural engineering design, as well as landscape architecture, for both projects. "Tourism is one of the main three priorities [of North Augusta]," said Mayor Brit Williams during the celebration, which was attended by local and state officials, as well as local business owners. "To say this is a long time in coming is an understatement." South Carolina Senator Tom Young, Jr. added: "This is not just North Augusta's riverfront, but it's South Carolina's riverfront." And South Carolina Representative Bill Hixon, a lifelong resident of the community, said, "I love North Augusta. I don't ever want to live anywhere else." The revitalization effort included the addition of space for 350 more seats, as well as bathroom facilities, a new stormwater management system, landscaping, and lighting. The city also added a walkway, landing, ramp, and a seven-slip boat dock.
