MYTH vs FACT It’s a common misconception that poor life choices have led an individual to homelessness, but statistic show that 41% of older adults entered homelessness after the age of 50. Of this 41%, majority worked their entire adult lives, many times working more than one job at a time. Generally hanging onto housing by a thread, they faced financially crisis and entered homelessness. Examples of common crisis faced by this demographic include a spouse becoming ill, job loss, divorce, or spousal death (The California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness). There are many misconceptions about why people become homeless and at Crisis House, we see the stigma’s everyday while working to divert individuals from becoming chronically homeless and into permanent housing. This year, at our Camp HOPE weekend retreat, we had three camp counselors who were former youth participants. Seeing their growth and hearing about how the program helped give them HOPE was a pleasure and now they are back to help bring the same HOPE to other youth.
