Explore - Collaborate - TEACH! It is back-to-school season and for the past several weeks I have been actively working on updating the content for the class I am teaching this fall at George Mason University: Crim 230 - Introduction to Homeland Security. It is an interesting experience because the class is online and asynchronous, so I do not have as much contact with the students as I would in person. But I still want to ensure they have a rich learning experience. Ways I do this: - Make sure my content is up-to-date - Pepper in stories from my career and real-life examples of the concepts - Find ways to get the students to interact with each other each week via discussion board prompts that make them think through the content. - create simulations, similar to tabletop exercises, that make them think through scenarios and discover all of the different roles it takes to resolve them. Reading the discussion board posts and seeing the learning happening is always fun. Often they come in thinking homeland security only refers to DHS. By the time they leave, they can explain the homeland security enterprise and all of the state, local, tribal, territorial, and federal government, Private Sector, NGO, Voluntary Org, and individual citizen roles that contribute to keeping our country safe.
