**Critical Path News** We’re pleased to highlight the positive impact of New York City’s Joint Bidding approach on infrastructure projects! By bundling utility work into a single contract, the city is not only reducing delays but also achieving significant cost savings—around $5.4 million per project, totaling over $107 million in annual savings. This collaborative effort marks a wonderful advancement in efficient infrastructure management, and we commend the city for its innovative approach. Together, we can look forward to a more streamlined and effective process that benefits everyone involved!

Upgrading New York City’s infrastructure is an urgent and challenging task, requiring relocation of utilities already underground. Joint Bidding allows the City to bid project and utility work together, avoiding years-long delays. Under Joint Bidding, all City and private utility work are bundled into one contract held and managed by the City. The utilities reimburse the City based on a public price list used by every bidder. The result is a level playing field with fewer delays and lower costs for everyone. Based on DDC’s Utility Coordination Report, the first comprehensive report conducted in the 20-year history of the Joint Bidding program, we discovered significant time and cost savings for NYC taxpayers. Joint Bidding projects were found to experience significantly shorter delay durations than Section U, returning streets to the public faster and more reliably, with less schedule variation. These time savings, combined with the financial benefit to the City from cost-sharing agreements, are estimated to save approximately $5.4 million per project. On an annual basis, Joint Bidding is estimated to save the City over $107 million. This analysis provides a data-driven foundation for the City to consider coordinated street construction as an effective methodology for future projects, yielding more efficient use of resources and improved project outcomes. During Climate Week NYC, AECOM convened climate leaders from government, non-profits, and the private sector to address Future Proofing New York: Planning for the New Normal, a symposium co-hosted with the Regional Plan Association. The standing-room-only crowd was welcomed by our own Thomas Prendergast, who introduced NYC Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera Joshi, and our Climate Adaptation Lead, Karen Appell, P.E., moderated one of the panels. Our subject-matter experts participated in a number of other Climate Week NYC event including resiliency in transportation systems, technology and innovation in offshore wind transmission, community engagement and Waterfront Edge Design Guidelines, the role of landscape architects in shaping resilient infrastructure, and how our partnerships with USAID have readied us for the PREPARE initiative. Congratulations to all who participated for making such an impactful Climate Week NYC possible. Here's the weekly wrap up of the top New York City construction, engineering, and architecture news highlights: * NYC Construction Spending Set to Surge to $88 Billion in 2024 New York City’s construction industry is poised for significant growth, with spending projected to soar to $88 billion in 2024, up from $83 billion in 2023. The New York Building Congress attributes this growth to sustained demand across the sector, despite challenges like rising interest rates and escalating costs that could temper growth in the years ahead. *Transformative Infrastructure Projects Gaining Momentum Several high-impact infrastructure projects are propelling the city into its next era of modernization: - The Port Authority’s monumental $32 billion capital plan is in full swing, featuring major overhauls like new terminals at JFK Airport, cutting-edge upgrades at LaGuardia, and a $10 billion transformation of the Port Authority Bus Terminal. - The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) continues its critical work on expanding the Second Avenue Subway, while also implementing sweeping subway system enhancements. - Construction is progressing on new roadways at JFK Airport, tied to a $1.24 billion contract aimed at optimizing access and efficiency for the airport’s massive redevelopment. *Affordable Housing Initiatives Making Strides New affordable housing projects are breaking ground to address the city’s pressing housing crisis: - In Brooklyn, a groundbreaking 180,000 sq ft development at 203 Newport Street will provide 174 affordable and supportive housing units, including much-needed housing for homeless individuals, seniors, and veterans. This project sets a new precedent by incorporating 40,000 sq ft of light manufacturing workshop space, creating a unique mixed-use development in the heart of the city. *Strengthening New York’s Public Libraries New York’s public libraries are getting a major boost, with $34 million awarded by the State Education Department for construction and modernization projects, $11 million of which is earmarked for New York City. These funds will be used to upgrade technology, improve accessibility, and enhance community resources in libraries across the five boroughs. *Yonkers Eyeing $10 Million Grant for Waterfront Revitalization Outside of NYC but within the metro region, Yonkers is pursuing a $10 million New York State grant to revitalize its downtown waterfront area. This initiative underscores broader efforts to secure investment for urban renewal and economic development across the region. These developments underscore the ongoing investment and transformation in New York City's urban landscape, with construction continuing to play a pivotal role in driving economic growth and shaping the city’s future.

🚨 Interesting news on the political front! Looks like there are some serious questions arising about Mayor Adams and his campaign donations. Recent reports suggest that he might have taken straw donations from an Uzbek construction boss. 🤔 The timing of these donations back in December 2020 and the details surrounding “Businessman-4” seem to line up with contributions from Mansurov and his team. Allegedly, Adams' representatives hinted that these straw donations could boost his influence. As always, transparency in politics is crucial! What do you think? Let's keep the conversation going! 💬 #Politics #Transparency #NYC
