USDA reports can move crop markets, and also offer insight into farm profitability with just a few calculations. The USDA’s annual Acreage report was released today and showed a 1.6% increase in corn acres and a .5% decrease in soybean acres from previous planting intentions, nearly opposite of expectations. Additionally, corn and soybean futures prices had dropped 6% and 7% respectively since the March 28 Prospective Plantings report, for year-end delivery, prior to the report release. The resulting potential revenue decline of $7.3B is a significant amount and banks should be aware of the impact on ag loan portfolios. #fintech & #data for #ag #communitybanks and #farmers

THE RANGE OF NEW-CROP PRICE EXPECTATIONS IS NARROWING EARLY — by Joseph Janzen Lower price levels and a narrower range of expected price outcomes indicates that the market believes that the remainder of 2024 will have lower price volatility than in previous years. The dynamics of options-implied new-crop price distributions for corn and soybeans in 2024 suggest the potential for a jump in new-crop futures prices is dwindling more quickly than usual. While seasonal rallies in the June to August growing season are typically viewed as a good time to make pre-harvest sales, markets appear to signal that a substantial growing season price increase is less likely in 2024 than in recent seasons. Although some analysts have suggested the market may be “assuming too much” or at least moving too quickly in that direction, the market continues to signal lower and less volatile corn and soybean prices than in recent years. This is especially germane for Ag Banks (% of loans to farms/farmers). 👨🌾 The average American farmer is 57 and a half years old, according to the most recent data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. 📈 Adjusted for inflation, agricultural land values have increased almost 3x since 1990, when boomers were entering mid-farming career.
