🌊 CrossGov aims to improve the coherence of multi-level and multi-sectoral marine policies, along with their environmental and social cross-compliance, to more effectively address biodiversity loss and improve the protection and restoration of our marine ecosystem. Sounds nice, right? But how does the project actually define #coherence and #crosscompliance as the basis of its research? 📢 We are excited to share our latest policy brief "Coherence in Policy Landscapes and Design". 🔍 This brief provides essential insights into how EU policies can work together more effectively to achieve the #EUGreenDeal objectives for our seas. Key takeaways include recommendations on enhancing the horizontal coherence of EU directives like the #MarineStrategyFrameworkDirective, #WaterFrameworkDirective, and #MaritimeSpatialPlanningDirective to tackle challenges such as marine #biodiversity loss, #pollution, and #climatechange. 🌱🐟 With European seas under pressure from competing maritime activities, coherent policy implementation is crucial to ensure sustainable growth and environmental protection. Discover how strategic enforcement, better integration of sectoral policies, and a result-based approach can help us reach the 2030 and 2050 targets. 🌍 🔗 Dive into the full brief and join the conversation on how we can build a resilient and thriving marine ecosystem in Europe: https://lnkd.in/e9YCUYiF Jonas Kyrönviita Suvi-Tuuli Puharinen Niko Soininen Froukje Maria Platjouw Cristian Passarello Ben Boteler Laura Friedrich Gunnar Sander Paulina Ramirez-Monsalve University of Eastern Finland The Center for Climate Change, Energy and Environmental Law - CCEEL Research Institute for Sustainability (RIFS) The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA)

🌊 Join the CrossGov workshop: Reconciling Offshore Wind and Biodiversity Targets: Are we on track to realise the European Green Deal?"🌱at #MissionArena3! 🚀 📅 Date: 26 November 2024 📍Amsterdam, Netherlands As we work towards realising the #EUGreenDeal, achieving both biodiversity and offshore #renewableenergy targets is essential. Offshore wind power plays a critical role in the clean energy transition, but we must also consider its impacts on ecosystems and species. In this workshop, we'll explore how policy targets can be balanced and what solutions are available for expanding #offshorewind while protecting #biodiversity. 🔑 Key Objectives: - Share regional progress on the EU Green Deal's biodiversity and renewable energy targets. - Showcase how countries in the North Sea region are integrating these into national policies. - Explore good practices for coherent policy strategies and addressing conflicts between biodiversity and renewable energy goals. 💡 What to Expect: - Insights into governance solutions balancing offshore wind and biodiversity targets. - Discussions and interactive exercises to better understand policy challenges and conflicts. - Actionable takeaways to improve policy coherence and integration in the North Sea region, feeding into the Arena Roadmap. This workshop is ideal for policymakers, sector representatives, NGOs, scientific institutions, clusters, and EU project participants. Don’t miss the chance to shape the future of offshore wind and biodiversity! 🌍 Check the preliminary agenda and register here: https://lnkd.in/e8HWGp7k ✨ We look forward to seeing you there! #oceangovernance #marinegovernance #oceanlaw #marinelaw

CrossGov reposted this
👋 This week Saskia Trubbach presented and discussed to what extent the ecological crisis in the #Oslofjord is a result of incoherent and ineffective coastal governance. 🐟 💡 How can we further strengthen the coherence between the Water Framework Directive, Planning and Building Act and Ocean Management Plans; and what role does the Oslofjord Plan play in this process? 📜 🙌 Saskia discussed this with NGOs and interest organizations, researchers, and the public sector involved in the governance of the Oslofjord, at a seminar organized by Norsk forening for miljørett 🔔 Important research from the CrossGov and BlueGreen Governance projects!

🌊 Meet Gunnar Sander and Saskia Trubbach from The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA). In the video below, they share insights from a case study focused on the #Oslofjord. This study explores the impacts of #eutrophication and #overfishing on the fjord’s ecosystem, specifically focusing on the limitations of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) in coastal zone management. While Norway has robust ecosystem-based ocean management in the open ocean, the coastal zone is left behind because WFD excludes critical parts of the ecosystem, such as fish, seabirds, and sea mammals. 🐟 🐋 🦅 However, the recently established Oslofjord Planning Council, a cross-sectoral initiative that brings together various actors to improve the coherence of existing policies, marks a significant step forward in integrating sectors and enhancing the implementation of sustainable planning instruments. 👇 Learn more about the case study here: https://lnkd.in/eERCVqtk #oceanlaw #marinelaw #oceangovernance
