In 2015, returning from an ordinary business trip, her Amtrak train derailed going 106 mph. Geralyn was not expected to live. She would spend the next several years undergoing dozens of surgical procedures, on total disability leave from her job, and facing the mental health challenges associated with physical trauma and pain. Today she is back at the top of her game, an active mother of three sons, and leading one of Washington’s top trade consultancies. In a historic first for AI governance, the U.S., UK, European Union and numerous member states signed an international legally binding treaty on artificial intelligence. The “Council of Europe Convention on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law” provides common global principles, rules, and standards to ensure signatories promote the design, development and deployment of human-centric AI in a trusted, responsible manner.    The seven principles in the Convention will apply to activities within the lifecycle of AI systems undertaken by public authorities or private sector stakeholders acting on their behalf. The Convention was negotiated over a period of two years featuring extensive multi-stakeholder participation from the Council of Europe member states, 11 non-member states, and 68 observers from the private sector, civil society, and academia.   As covered in our Client Alert from earlier this year, we believe this Convention sets an important precedent for future global collaboration on AI regulation and standard setting. Sharing best practices in the treatment of lung cancer at APEC Perú 2024! 🌟 CMI facilitated a Lung Cancer Breakfast Dialogue where we discussed best practices and recommendations for APEC collaboration on lung cancer control. 🌟 In many APEC economies, lung cancer is diagnosed at an advanced stage when treatment effectiveness drops precipitously. 🌟Lung cancer causes more deaths globally than any other type of cancer. In Australia, Canada, China, Japan, Korea, Mexico, and the United States, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. In Malaysia, Peru, Thailand, and Vietnam, lung cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. 🌟 By working with industry, APEC economies can find solutions to close access gaps across the care continuum for lung cancer.

So excited to finally share this NEWS! Crowell & Moring International is adding to our already deep #digitalpolicy bench with the addition of Nigel Cory to the team. Nigel is a recognized global expert on a range of #digitaltrade issues, spanning from cross-border data flows, #cybersecurity policy, and #AIgovernance, to the development of international technical standards for cloud, quantum, and semiconductors. He’s an in-demand speaker on these topics and works frequently across a range of multilateral venues such as APEC, the G20, and OECD. Nigel is a member of the U.K.’s International Data Transfer Expert Council, a fellow with the The National Bureau of Asian Research, and a partner to digital policymakers around the world. He’s based in Washington but will work seamlessly with our Asia-based colleagues. And as a native Aussie and former diplomat, we look forward to having him in this part of the world frequently.
