Just five years ago, early childhood educators continued to work during the pandemic, risking their health and livelihood as their costs increased and enrollment plummeted. How are child care workers faring now? And what new threats do they face?
We are pleased to announce the next cohort of fellows for the Integrated #Research & #Policy Fellowship! - Casi York is an infant/toddler #educator in an #EarlyHeadStart/Head Start classroom in Washington D.C. His interests include #recruitment and #mentorship of male teachers, the importance of role models, and increasing access and support for education and training for current educators. - Kristy DeGraaf is a family child care provider located in Utah and a #volunteer/advocate for Utah Care for Kids Coalition. Her policy interests focus on helping support and improve the #MentalHealth and well-being of ECE providers. - Flora Ziprin is a PhD student at the UCLA School of Education & Information Studies/Human Development & Psychology. Her research interests include compensation, whether leadership engagement influences educator well-being and fosters positive workplace dynamics, and the link between improving educator well-being and improving access to high-quality learning environments. - Heather Valentine is an EdLD candidate at the Harvard Graduate School of Education/Education Leadership. Her research interests include stopping the “negative reinforcing loop” of burnout and turnover of unsupported, poorly compensated educators and developing sustainable workforce supports including mental health care expansion, health and retirement benefits, #ContinuingEducation, and paid time off. The fellowship is a 12-month paid program designed to support the #leadership development of #ECE #professionals and help #EmergingLeaders build their expertise about the ECE workforce while gaining skills to effectively bridge #research and #policy. Our latest analysis shows that 5 years after the onset of the pandemic, the child care sector continues to face a long-standing jobs crisis. In the last 6 months, national employment has hovered around 1.1 million. https://lnkd.in/gSyfRPyX The numbers suggest that ARPA funding, along with continued support from states and localities after its expiration, helped to stabilize the field and sustain job creation. With the proposed federal funding freeze on safety net programs such as Medicaid and SNAP that 43 percent of child care families rely on, and uncertainty surrounding Head Start and other publicly funded child care programs, the impact on child care jobs remains uncertain.

Last month, Maine's governor proposed a series of cuts that would reduce funding for its early childhood workforce salary supplement and cut a pilot program that reduces child care costs for child care employees. For my first blog post with Center for the Study of Child Care Employment, UC Berkeley, I wrote about how while decreasing investments in the early childhood workforce may reduce a state’s budget in the short term, it has real long-term costs for educators and families. https://lnkd.in/eWSD9UBV And thank you Heather Marden for sharing photos of these incredible educators fighting to protect these investments!

A comprehensive tool for understanding how states, territories, and local governments are supporting early care and education (ECE) workforce compensation post-ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act). It includes a database of state and local initiatives, as well as an intuitive dashboard to visualize trends and patterns. It's time to support Maine early childhood educators! Maine's state stipend program that stabilized the child care workforce and improved access for families made it a real national leader in supporting the workforce. But it is now under threat as the Governor proposes chopping the stipend program in half. “Reliable, affordable child care is not a luxury — it’s a fundamental building block for a thriving workforce. The educators who provide child care are the unsung heroes of the economy,” Morgan Hart Tolin, a co-executive director of the Maine Association for the Education of Young Children, told the Press Herald. "Right now, we are dangerously close to losing more of those educators," she said.
