You may have heard of microplastics, but what are they and what risks do they pose? Department of Chemistry at Colorado State University Assistant Professor Megan Hill works with polymeric materials with applications in sustainability, catalysis and soft materials. She recently sat down with Colorado State University Source to answer some common questions about microplastics. 🐏 CSU Source: What are microplastics? 👩🔬 Dr. Megan Hill: Plastic that has broken down into micro-sized bits. Nanoplastics are even smaller - as small as a grain of rice in diameter. 🐏: What do we know about how microplastics affect us? 👩🔬: We still have a lot to learn about how microplastics affect our health. Initially, it was thought that it wouldn’t be that big of an issue because particles have to be really small to pass through your esophagus or digestive tract, so we assumed microplastics would not persist in the body. But as these particles have become smaller and smaller, now they’re accumulating in tissues and throughout our bodies. We still have a lot to learn about how microplastics affect our health. 🐏: What are some positive developments? 👩🔬: Scientists have teamed up and come up with some really promising solutions. They have developed new recycling methods, they have engineered enzymes that are more efficient at breaking down plastics, they have developed catalysts that can convert plastics into useful chemicals, etc. To read the full article, visit: https://lnkd.in/gUfm7qjf #microplastics #chemistry #sustainability

Meena Balgopal, a University Distinguished Teaching Scholar and Biology Professor spent a portion of her summer visiting with the Dalai Lama to present a penultimate science pedagogy book. A final version is underway with plans to be published next year. It will provide the opportunity for monasteries to teach one another academic science. Balgopal learned many things from her years collaboratively writing this book, teaching monasteries and meeting with His Holiness. Read more about her experience: https://col.st/R09Be

It's bittersweet news that we share Dean Janice Nerger is transitioning to a new CSU System leadership role on Oct. 1, and Professor Jacob Roberts, chair of the Department of Physics, has been named interim dean of the college. We are so grateful for Dr. Nerger and her leadership over the past 13 years. We wish her the best of luck as she transitions into her new role as an advisor to Rick Miranda, the chief academic officer of the CSU System. “It has been an extraordinary honor to serve as the dean of the College of Natural Sciences since 2010,” Nerger said. “Throughout my tenure, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing remarkable achievements within the college. We’ve celebrated the completion of two state-of-the-art science buildings, seen a substantial increase in research funding and our endowment, and grown our enrollment to become the largest college at CSU. As I transition into my new role, I am excited to continue supporting the exceptional programs and talented individuals that make CSU such an outstanding university.” Read more on CSU Source: https://lnkd.in/gDcsTYuy
