Food insecurity is top of mind during this holiday season, but it is a pervasive issue all year. Listen in, friends and supporters and help if you can!
The holiday season is fast approaching and with that comes the spirit of giving. Connecticut Foodshare prepares over 50,000 Thanksgiving meals for Connecticut families that have food insecurity. The need for food assistance has been greater this year, growing nearly 23 percent from last year. This could be your family member, a neighbor, a co-worker or a friend wondering where their next meal is coming from. I talk to the CEO of Foodshare and a Foodshare board member about the growing need and how important it is to treat these families with the dignity they deserve. Last Wednesday, our team volunteered at Connecticut Foodshare in Wallingford, CT. Collaborating with and helping the team at CT Foodshare is always a rewarding experience, as they are highly dedicated to building a thriving community free of hunger. This time, we surpassed our previous record by sorting 14,811 pounds of food, which equates to approximately 12,342 meals. We are proud to support CT Foodshare's mission of creating long-term solutions and distributing nutritious food through local partner programs in an effort to alleviate hunger. Thank you to Michaela Blain and the CT Foodshare team for your leadership and hospitality. We’re excited to return and can’t wait for our next opportunity to volunteer!

“I'm on a fixed income and I eat a lot of fresh produce, that's the reason why I came. It's a wonderful opportunity. Thank you so much.” Neighbors like Christine, a senior on a fixed income, are very grateful for the Connecticut Foodshare mobile food pantries. She visits regularly now for the fresh fruits and vegetables. Thanks to the support of the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation, we can safely get more nutritious food to people in need across Connecticut!

Connecticut Foodshare's vision of having a thriving community, free of hungry, has been known in cities like Hartford and Tolland Country. Once the state's official Feeding America food bank went statewide, they invested in billboards, transit media on Metro-North Railroad platforms, and DDA in areas of the state that were unfamiliar with their services and statewide expansion.
