The vast majority of piezoelectric sensors share the same fundamental operating principle in utilizing the direct piezoelectric effect to convert mechanical energy into an electric signal. But after that, the similarities quickly come to an end. Sensor design changes drastically depending on the kind of mechanical quantity that is to be measured. Pressure, strain, torque, acceleration, even acoustic emission can be turn into an electric signal, enabling a plethora of potential applications. In mid-September, CTS will embark on an East Asian tech conference blitz, covering the ISTU 2024 (International Society for Therapeutic Ultrasound) and the 2024 IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control Joint Symposium, both taking place in stunning Taipei City, Taiwan. ISTU (19-23 September) specifically emphasizes the use of ultrasound in therapeutic medical applications, so naturally, our representatives will bring with them plenty of product samples to showcase, including piezoceramic focusing bowls and single crystal plate components used in focusing arrays. These products in particular are increasingly employed in surface and deep tissue ultrasound treatments. At UFFC JS (23-26 September), not only our sales representatives, but also several of our R&D engineers will be in attendance. Contributing to the densely packed program of interesting lectures and discussions, they will present the latest findings of their research into alternate current polarization (ACP) poling of piezoelectric composites and lead-free piezoceramic materials for ultrasound transducers. The series 500 acceleration position sensors from CTS are widely used in two-wheel EVs that run at speeds of 40km/hr and upwards. Once the driver rotates the handlebar, the position sensor reads how much the handle has been rotated and sends a signal to the motor controller to accelerate or decelerate. CTS is a proud benefactor of 'Acoustofluidics 2024', hosted at Uppsala University in Sweden this week. The use of Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) devices in aerospace and defense systems is not a new occurrence, as the performance and reliability of commercial, industrial, and automotive grade components have improved over the years to the point where they, in many instances, can meet the otherwise strict demands of MIL standards. CTS is launching a new, comprehensive lead-free piezoceramic materials brochure, featuring FOUR NEW MATERIAL FORMULATIONS as well as our already established solutions. The newcomers are the LF SERIES – a material line based on the promising KNN material family. LF22 and LF41 are modelled after traditional soft-doped PZT ceramics, and as such, they display high sensitivity and lower mechanical quality factors, making them well suited for hydrophones, medical imaging and flow/level metering. LF51 and LF52, on the other hand, are harder materials with a high mechanical quality factor and lower dielectric loss. They perform well in high-power ultrasound applications such as medical therapeutics and ultrasonic cleaning/welding. Follow the link below to view our lead-free materials program in its entirety.
