At the 17th Annual Organization of World Heritage Cities World Congress, CHiFA Co-founders Bonnie Burnham and Gary Hattem drew on lessons from the 1970s New York City fiscal crisis and CHiFA’s own case study research to highlight enduring strategies for sustainable #culturalheritage development and financing solutions. 🔸 Partnerships for Sustainable Heritage Development: They emphasized the importance of collaboration between governments, NGOs, philanthropy, and private investors to drive sustainable urban regeneration. They shared how public and philanthropic funds can serve as catalysts for attracting private capital. 🔹 Innovative Financing Tools for Heritage Preservation: Hattem discussed tools like subsidies, guarantees, and blended financing models to mitigate risk, while Burnham highlighted catalytic capital and CHiFA’s Heritage Accelerator as key to fast-tracking heritage-led regeneration with social, environmental, and financial impact. 🔸 Cultural Heritage as a Driver for Urban Habitability: They emphasized that heritage preservation fosters thriving, livable cities. They shared heritage-led regeneration case studies showcasing economic development and urban resilience. Financing Sustainable Heritage Regeneration
About us
The Cultural Heritage Finance Alliance (CHiFA) promotes heritage-led regeneration through collaborative and innovative financing solutions. The intent is to position historic and culturally significant environments as anchors of productive social, economic and environmental development. Heritage-led regeneration stimulates local economies and strengthens communities. At a time when accelerating climate change, catastrophic natural disasters, sustained conflicts and a global health pandemic are rapidly changing the world as we know it, historic environments provide cultural grounding, reinforce well-being, and foster a sense of common humanity and collective identity. It is important for heritage places to survive and prosper and it is within our collective ability to see that they do. We all have a stake in their future. Government and philanthropic resources are scarce and fall far short of documented need; private sector investment is elusive for all but the highest profile international projects. We engage with local actors (communities and public and private partners) to organize planning assistance and to provide low-cost, mission driven working capital, thereby enabling projects to better attract return-seeking private finance.

Reposting a blog from our partner La Mano del Mono: Read about the recent trip to Mexico for the #RutadelRioGrande Heritage Regeneration Project! Partners met with each other and community members to explore heritage sites along the route and develop a work plan that includes training and technical support, aiming to develop a heritage trail that respects both the environment and local traditions. As part of the project, LMDM is implementing a Market Ready Tourism model that empowers community governance of #culturalheritage and #tourism. As the blog notes, 'Market Ready Tourism is laying the foundation for tourism that respects and regenerates, creating an authentic connection between visitors and the guardians of this priceless biocultural treasure.' Stay tuned for more updates on community engagement and next steps! #CHiFAinAction #RutaDelRioGrande
#TurismoBiocultural #Sustentabilidad #Oaxaca #CHIFA #LMDM #TurismoRegenerativo

Thank you to everyone who joined our webinar on the Ruta del Rio Grande Heritage Regeneration Project! During the discussion with Norma Barbacci, Dr. Nelly Robles García emphasized how this project will serve as a catalyst for academic inquiry, cultural heritage preservation and economic growth in the region. "The Tehuacán-Cuicatlán region is one of Southern Mexico's three cradles of civilization, yet it's largely understudied... The sites that we've chosen to restart the cultural studies of the region, the Ruta del Rio Grande, are crucial for understanding both the rich cultural and natural history of the area, which holds immense biodiversity and historical significance. The work now is to make a roadmap of what has to be done. There is a lot of work ahead of us. It's a task that seems almost impossible. But by determining some areas for intensive work, we aim to create a multiplier effect, ensuring that generations to come will continue to gain knowledge about this remarkable region." 💡 Missed the webinar or want a full recap?
