This morning, the Cumberland County Fire Chiefs Association’s Fire & Life Safety (FLSE) Committee hosted a public education safety event sponsored by Vander Fire Department, Fort Liberty Emergency Services, Cumberland County Schools and the Cumberland County Fire Marshal’s Office at Sunnyside Elementary School. Multiple safety stations were featured, and each safety station provided critical fire safety education to multiple classes and grade levels. Thank you to South River EMC for providing grant funding through the Operation Round Grant Program, which gave $9,030 to the FLSE Committee to purchase bracelets, fire safety goodie bags and fire helmets for students. South River EMC’s commitment to this initiative has been vital in educating children in Cumberland County. The FLSE Committee is comprised of multiple emergency service members and school members who provide unified fire safety education across the county.

Cumberland County employees continue to assist our western North Carolina counties. Terry Streets (Building Inspector, left) and Gilbert Sanchez (Code Enforcement Officer, right) deployed this week to aide the Planning and Inspections office in Black Mountain. They are assisting with hurricane damage assessments and recovery. Additionally, Jon Soles (Senior Public Information Specialist) is assisting Avery County in their communications efforts shared photos of the resourcefulness of the Avery County team. Photos show Avery County Solid Waste professionals operating a container site, even with the office washed off of its foundation. Other photos show Avery County Animal Services mobile adoption units continuing operations and serving the pets of the community. We thank all who have stepped up to support those impacted by Hurricane Helene.
