Gridwise Analytics and S&P Global Mobility explored this in a whitepaper, breaking down how gig mobility data will be the key to scaling autonomous ride-hail fleets efficiently. With trips projected to exceed 6 billion by 2030, unlocking the next wave of growth depends on lowering costs, improving fleet deployment, and forecasting demand in real time. For AVs to bring ride costs down, platforms will need smarter fleet intelligence to predict peak demand, reduce dead miles, and dynamically adjust pricing. Our research dives into these trends, outlining what the ride-hail industry must do to stay ahead. Key takeaways from our research: 🤖 Current ride-hail pricing is stuck at $2 per mile—AVs will need to bring it below $1 per mile to compete with car ownership. 🤖 Nearly 1 million robo-taxis will be required by 2040 to meet future demand. 🤖 Fleet efficiency is a major challenge—AV fleets need to average 12-15% dead miles, but even the best ride-hail fleets operate at 20-22%. 🤖 Demand and pricing vary dramatically between and within cities, making fleet optimization complex and making data a requirement to maximize efficiency.
