I was encouraged by the increased attention to the role of immune cells in Alzheimer’s disease at #AAIC24. With age and cell damage, microglia and other immune cells may shift from protective to destructive. ICYMI: a new study supported by Cure Alzheimer's Fund funding, and led by Dr. David Holtzman, reveals that mice with loss of brain tissue caused by toxic tau, similar to that in Alzheimer’s, also have more peripheral immune T cells in their brains, attracted there by the brain-resident microglia. We have a great addition to your summer reading list! Our 2023 Annual Report is out, full of science on the cutting edge of the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. We are proud that it once again reflects a broad spectrum of diverse research. Since our founding 20 years ago, we have sought to take on high-risk, high-reward projects reflecting a range of innovative but rigorously established hypotheses, and we supported over 100 such efforts last year alone.  The clinical benefits achieved by the new anti-amyloid drugs are encouraging as evidence that progress is being made, but we need to do better against amyloid as a target and against the myriad other targets this complex disease implicates. In 2023 alone, we provided grants to investigations focused on: ▶ Triggers and mechanisms of tau misfolding and propagation; ▶ Deeper understanding of the drivers leading APP cleavage towards beta amyloid production;  ▶ Mechanisms of synaptic and circuit dysfunction and support in AD; ▶ Neuroinflammation and the role of brain-resident and peripheral immune cells; ▶ Impact of immunization on AD pathology; ▶ Potential for gut microbiome interventions to affect AD brain pathology; ▶ Molecular pathways altered by lifestyle interventions like exercise, diet, sleep, and stress management; and ▶ Many other promising areas of research.   We understand the importance of unconventional ideas in scientific breakthroughs; that's why we strive to be the funder that exceptional researchers turn to for support in exploring potentially paradigm-changing concepts. We, and the researchers we support, are deeply grateful for our donors' generosity. Their contributions allow us to make these leaps forward possible. We're incredibly excited to see what discoveries unfold in the diverse range of projects we have and will fund in 2024. Yesterday, an expert Advisory Committee convened by the FDA unanimously recommended that the FDA approve Eli Lilly’s donanemab for treatment of the earliest stages of Alzheimer’s disease. It’s truly exciting to see a second disease-modifying drug reach this milestone in the FDA regular approval process and to recognize that our field is moving biomarker-driven diagnosis and prognosis rapidly into the clinic. We thank the FDA and the members of the Advisory Committee, including CureAlz-supported scientist Dr. Constantino Iadecola, for their thoughtful, patient-centric discussion of donanemab and its risk/reward profile for individuals in the earliest stages of clinical Alzheimer’s disease, and look forward to the FDA’s final decision.  #donanemab Cure Alzheimer's Fund  https://lnkd.in/eVEVCTmX

Cure Alzheimer’s Fund has announced the recipients of the inaugural Jeffrey L. Morby Prize. Congratulations to Dr. David M. Holtzman and Dr. Xiaoying Chen of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. They were selected by their peers for their paper “Microglia-Mediated T Cell Infiltration Drives Neurodegeneration in Tauopathy,” which was published in Nature in March 2023. The Morby Prize is named in honor of our late Co-Founder Jeffrey L. Morby and will be awarded annually to the senior and first authors of a recent scientific publication that transforms the fundamental understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and opens new paths to translate scientific results into effective ways to prevent, diagnose or treat the disease. We were honored to have Jeff’s wife and CureAlz Co-Founder, Jacqui Morby, present this year’s award in person.
