Cure Blindness Project Clinical training meeting at American Academy of Ophthalmology
43 million people in the world are blind, and 90% of them live where access to eye care is difficult or impossible. These people often live in loneliness and exclusion. Cure Blindness Project is a global nonprofit organization driven to help people retain or regain their sight. To make that happen, we enable underserved communities to cure avoidable blindness by developing high-quality, cost-effective, sustainable eye care wherever they are. For 17 million blind people, sight could be cured with a 10-minute cataract surgery. For the millions suffering from corneal blindness, early intervention means their condition can be treated and not progress to blindness. At Cure Blindness Project, we believe avoidable blindness can – and must – be overcome. For nearly 30 years, we have worked alongside a capable network of collaborators to provide more than 1.6 million sight-restoring surgeries and screenings to more than 16.5 million people. We’ve trained more than 20,100 eye health professionals, and established 5 eye hospitals. What started in the Himalayas has now reached 30 countries. Cure Blindness Project is striving for a summit where sight is in reach. There is more work left to do, but we can overcome the mountain of global blindness.

🏔️ The Vision Executives team successfully completed Walk for #WorldSightDay and raised over £500 for Cure Blindness Project. We climbed Snowdon, Wales’ highest peak at 1,085 meters, in 4 hours 41 minutes, covering just over 13km. We had an amazing time, despite tackling some snow along the way! ❄️ We would like to thank everyone for the support we have received! 🥳 Your generous donations will fund multiple #cataract surgeries, making a huge difference for the lives of many in areas of the world with little to no access to #healthcare. Any further donations are still welcome so visit our Just Giving page before it closes on Monday 14th Oct 🙏 https://lnkd.in/eEJ-YHVg 🎥 Stay tuned for a video of our journey—coming soon!

As a parent, I've found that nothing is more valuable than watching your child explore the world with interested, open eyes. This year's World Sight Day theme, "Love Your Eyes, Kids," is particularly relevant, reminding us of the importance of nurturing and protecting the gift of sight from an early age. I am one of the blessed ones to work in eye care with Cure Blindness Project, whose aim to end needless blindness feels more important than ever. Whether it's a youngster seeing their family clearly for the first time after a simple cataract surgery or a village finally having access to quality eye care, every step we take is about restoring people's vision—and their future. Millions of youngsters worldwide are at risk of losing their sight due to preventable reasons. But we are working hard to alter that. From India to Ethiopia, and many more places in between, we provide eye tests, surgeries, and education to ensure that no one, particularly our children, is left in the darkness of preventable blindness. So, today, as we commemorate World Sight Day, let us pledge to "love our eyes" and protect the vision of future generations. The world is such a beautiful place when we can all see it clearly—and every child deserves that opportunity. Let us work together to create a future without needless blindness. #WorldSightDay2024 #LoveYourEyes #CureBlindness #EliminateBlindness #EveryChildMatters #EyeCareForAll #ProtectTheirVision

In celebration of #WorldSightDay (October 10), Cure Blindness Project is excited to share news of our plans to bring sight-restoring services to six new countries around the world: Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia, Pakistan, Paraguay, and Zambia. “The time has come to amplify our impact,” declares K-T Overbey, CEO of Cure Blindness Project. “From tackling cataract blindness in the Himalayas to now tackling all forms of treatable blindness across 30 countries, our commitment to eradicating this issue is unwavering. We are relentless in our pursuit of a brighter ‘seeable’ future for all, but we cannot do it alone.” #LoveYourEyes
October is Blindness Awareness Month World Sight Day 2024 focuses on children’s eye health. Cure Blindness Project believes restoring sight to a child puts that child on a better path for life. + 450 million children have a sight condition that requires treatment but lack access to affordable, available eye care. + Children in low- and middle-income countries with vision loss are 2-5X less likely to be in school. + Every day, young people miss out on learning and social opportunities because of a vision issue that could be treated, corrected and often cured.
2023 marked another successful year for Cure Blindness Project, formerly Himalayan Cataract Project, as we continued to expand its impact across South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa to help people retain and restore their sight. Read the full report to learn about exciting milestones, and join us in celebrating the life-changing impact that was made possible through the generosity of our donors!
