About us
Cushing Terrell was founded in 1938 by architects Ralph Cushing and Everett Terrell. Ralph and Everett acted on the belief that integrating architecture, engineering, and design opened the doors for deepened relationships and enhanced creativity: that belief was the beginning of our design practice and still defines us today. Driven by empathy, our multidisciplinary teams work together to design systems and spaces that help people live their best lives, achieve their visions, and enjoy healthy, sustainable built environments. Each year, we complete projects translating into $1 billion in construction costs. These projects include schools, hospitals and clinics; single- and multi-family residences; and recreational, commercial, retail, and industrial developments. Our services include architecture; mechanical, electrical, structural, civil, and environmental engineering; planning; landscape architecture; interior design; and many more. Hailing from 13 offices in seven states, our comprehensive approach and staff of 400+ professionals spanning 30 disciplines and seven markets enable Cushing Terrell to offer clients unrivaled partnerships, service, and value. With our passion to develop imaginative solutions and forever improve, this is where design meets you.

The secret is out! When our Denver team moved into their new Upper Downtown location, we thought it was a great opportunity to share about the design capabilities represented by their talented team and hear about it in their own words. Laura Dougherty, Denver region director; Charlie Deese, design director; Michael White PE, civil engineering director, and Nora Bland, AICP, urban planning director, show off their new space and describe what makes the Denver team tick. “I love that we can be a pillar and be part of a new Upper Downtown Denver that is really a live/work/play thriving piece of this city," Nora said. #UpperDowntownDenver #DowntownDenver #DenverDesignFirms

Welcome to the woods in Hamilton, Montana. With the Bitterroot Valley as the setting, this home sits within the historic Stock Farm Club and was designed to capture the spirit of Montana but also exemplify the more contemporary tastes of the homeowners. The “modern mountain” design blends into the landscape using locally sourced natural materials and is centered around a spacious main living and dining area that opens to an expansive outdoor entertaining space that overlooks the Bitterroot Mountain Range. In partnership with Baron Properties, Cushing Terrell provided architectural, mechanical, and structural design for The Mill at Loggers Creek, a multifamily project in Boise, Idaho. The project comprises 125 residential units, including 30 studio, 58 one-bedroom, and 37 two-bedroom units, reflecting a mix that serves the diverse demographic in this near-downtown location. To activate the streetscape, the design team enhanced approximately 3,350 sq. ft. of nonresidential space with floor-to-interior ceiling glazing at the first-floor northwest elevation and corner concrete masonry features. This space was designed to include offices, a main lobby, meeting/workspace, mail center, fitness center, and a yoga studio. The project’s outdoor amenities include a pool on the ground level, a courtyard and pathways facing Loggers Creek, an elevated plaza, group seating areas, and outdoor BBQ/dining areas. Also included is space for a future rooftop patio and shade trellis at the corner of Division and Rossi Streets. Our talented project partners include Engineered Structures, Inc. (ESI), Axiom Engineering, KM Engineering, LLP., The Land Group, Inc., and Rutledge Haro Design. Congratulations to the Bigfork community, Flathead County Library, and Martel Construction, Inc. on the construction completion of the new Bigfork branch library! This is a project near and dear to our hearts and one that marked an opportunity for our team to embark on a Design for Freedom by Grace Farms (DFF) pilot project, one of only 12 in the world. DFF pilot projects are helping to accelerate the movement to end forced/slave labor in the building materials supply chain through rigorous research and ethical design principles to create a more humane built environment. It's exciting to see the project come to fruition and become a pivotal place for learning and discovery in the community. “The design is a playful space of colors, shapes, light, texture, and moments of discovery,” said architect Shawn Pauly. “The goal was to meld teaching and learning, bridge generations, support both business and play, offer space for the community and individuals, and create indoor and outdoor settings for enjoying good books.” #LibraryDesign #CommunityLibrary #DesignForFreedom #DFFPilotProject

Cushing Terrell is committed to creating a safe and welcoming workplace for ALL. We recently launched our second employee resource group, Hue, as a platform for Cushing Terrell team members in the LGBTQIA2S+ community, and allies, to support one another, discuss issues affecting them, plan activities, and more. This is a year-round, all-the-time commitment, but since June is Pride Month, we want to celebrate each letter in the ever-expanding community acronym and anyone who falls within the all-important "+" that follows. We hope both Hue and our first ERG, Women in Action (launched in 2023), help foster a stronger sense of inclusivity and community among our team members. We wish everyone a safe, happy, and loving Pride! Attached is a collage of a few of our team members celebrating this month. #PrideMonth #EmployeeResourceGroup #TeamCushingTerrell

One of the recent projects our team has been super excited about is the long-range plan for the University of Denver's Kennedy Mountain Campus. This unique project looks to create a second campus for the university, one set in 724 acres of pristine wilderness about a two-hour drive from DU's city campus in Denver. The goal is to develop an experiential learning retreat that will enrich the university's higher education curriculum by offering all the benefits that come with being steeped in nature. Design Director Charlie Deese talks about the long-range planning process and project goals in the newest post on our blog. #EducationDesign #HigherEducation #ExperientialLearning #CampusPlanning #LongRangePlanning #DenverCO #UniversityofDenver
