Tragically, a 13-year-old became a victim of sextortion, underscoring an alarming trend that targets children and young adults online. Understanding how these perpetrators operate can help us all stay vigilant: Building Trust: They pose as peers or romantic interests, creating a false sense of security. Requesting Explicit Content: After establishing a bond, they manipulate victims into sharing private images or videos. Blackmail & Extortion: Once they have compromising material, perpetrators demand more content or money—threatening to expose victims if they don’t comply. Exploiting Fear & Shame: Victims often feel too embarrassed or terrified to seek help, enabling the cycle to continue. As cybersecurity professionals, parents, and responsible digital citizens, let’s emphasize open communication and education. It’s crucial we encourage children and teens to speak up if they feel unsafe online, and report suspicious activity immediately.

Tragic news shook the sports world when a college football coach lost his 13-year-old son to a fatal shooting linked to a disturbing case of sextortion.
🚨 There are now 41 teens confirmed dead by suicide while being blackmailed on social media. 👉 Levi Maciejewski (forever 13) was found by his family in his backyard with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. 💬 Levi’s mother said: “An online predator coerced, threatened, and blackmailed him, leading to devastating consequences.” 📈 It’s a crime called financial sextortion. And it has surged up 18,000% in the past two years. ⚠️ Nearly all of the financial sextortion schemes targeting teens involve Instagram, Snap Inc., Apple and/or Cash App. ⚠️ Nearly all of the financial sextortion targeting teens are perpetrated by West African cybercriminals called Yahoo Boys. The phrase “how to blackmail someone with photos” was trending up 850% on Google in Nigeria this year. 🚔 Law enforcement has classified Levi’s death as a homicide due to the deliberate and senseless actions of another individual. 📣 How many more teens have to die for Meta, Apple, and Congress to take decisive action to stop this?
