Where are safety devices located on Acetylene Cylinders? The smaller Acetylene Sizes, such as the MC and B, have only one opening at the top of the cylinder for the valve. These Mc and B valves have the safety device built right into the valve - a fusible metal alloy “plug” located in the valve body. The fusible metal alloy will melt at 212 degrees Fahrenheit, allowing the acetylene gas to be released in case of exposure to excessive heat like in a fire. MC cylinders use CGA-200 and B’s use a CGA-520 valve. Larger acetylene cylinders, 75 CF and above, typically have three openings at the top. The larger center opening is for the valve, which can be either CGA 510 or the less common CGA-300. The outer two small openings on either side are for the fuse plugs, which are the cylinder's safety devices, and these are filled with the same fusible metal alloy. Just like with the MC and B cylinders, the metal alloy in the fuse plug melts at 212 degrees Fahrenheit, allowing acetylene to be released if exposed to extreme heat. #CylTec #QuickTip #Safety #Acetylene #Gasindustry #Cylinders #Gas #Valves
