As a long-standing supporter of the Galveston County Recovery Fund, we're deeply concerned about the extensive damage and ongoing hardships the Galveston community faces following Hurricane Beryl. Our friends and neighbors are enduring oppressive heat without electricity, impacting their access to air conditioning, refrigeration, and other vital services. The Galveston County Recovery Fund has been activated for the fifth time since its inception, with the mission to mobilize private philanthropy for disaster relief. Together with partners, including the United Way of Galveston, which expertly manages these funds, we are committed to navigating these challenging times. The need is immediate, and the stakes are high, especially for our most vulnerable—children, the elderly, and those with medical conditions. We stand united with our fellow foundations: -Harris and Eliza Kempner Fund -Ippolito Charitable Foundation -Moody Foundation -Sasser Family Foundation -Permanent Endowment Fund of Moody Memorial First United Methodist Church -Mary Moody Northen Endowment We're calling on the community to join us, ensuring that no one in Galveston County faces this crisis alone. Galveston holds memories for millions, but its future is at risk. A National Wildlife Federation report funded by CGMF warns that climate change poses the greatest threat since the 1900 hurricane. Experts say Galveston will experience sea level rise sooner and more acutely than many other U.S. coastal areas. Higher sea levels and stronger storms mean greater inundation. The report says that Galveston can serve as a proving ground for adaptation strategies, but, as the Houston Chronicle's Chris Tomlinson writes, must act quickly before #GalvestonStrong starts trending and cherished memories are washed away. https://lnkd.in/eWM_rnN9

Our freshwater resources in the United States are at risk, with wetland losses up 50% in the last decade and the Supreme Court rolling back protections. The Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation, an inaugural member of the America the Beautiful Freshwater Challenge, was joined earlier today by a group of new members. Together, we're protecting vital waterways and wetlands that provide clean water and support jobs. We hope you'll join us. #FreshwaterChallenge #Conservation https://lnkd.in/eCemMzp2

We agree with @douglewin. It's time for Texas policymakers, utilities, retailers, and cooperatives to broaden their scope of grid resiliency to include not only infrastructure but also resilience at the consumer level. Integrating distributed energy resources like solar panels and battery storage is essential. These systems not only help us withstand increasingly severe weather but also relieve grid strain during peak periods and enhance overall capacity. Additionally, the implementation of insulation, high-efficiency heat pumps, and smart thermostats can significantly improve both customer resilience and grid reliability. These solutions reduce energy consumption, lower consumer costs, and create a more stable, reliable, and adaptable grid. As we consider future strategies to avoid multi-day outages, a comprehensive approach that marries utility investments with customer-sited technologies is imperative. By empowering consumers to be part of the solution, Texas can develop a more robust and reliable energy system that is better equipped to handle extreme weather and the escalating demands of our growing state. #EnergyResilience #SustainableEnergy #TXenergy https://lnkd.in/dUpuZb6v
