👉Did you know that most Spanish speaking survivors of domestic violence do not report abuse because of limited proficiency in English making it challenging to communicate with law enforcement or social services? Addressing these issues requires culturally sensitive approaches that build trust and provide accessible resources for victims. Thanks to our friends at Amazon for inviting DCVLP to talk about the importance of having Spanish speaking attorneys for Spanish speaking survivors of domestic violence. Our Co-Legal Director, Aida Vindell and Domestic Violence Program Coordinator, Lea Sondheimer, met many new attorneys who are interested in using their Spanish skills to help survivors find safety. About us
DC Volunteer Lawyers Project (DCVLP) was established in 2008 to create, support and utilize a network of volunteer lawyers to provide pro bono legal services to domestic violence victims and at-risk children. Today, our 225 active volunteer attorneys, supported by our small but experienced team of Supervising Attorneys, give a voice in court to over 400 clients each year. They help victims escape abusive relationships, and children find safe and stable homes. With our partner organizations the District Alliance for Safe Housing (DASH) and My Sister’s Place, we also sponsor a weekly Domestic Violence Resource Clinic where more than 300 victims annually access legal, housing and counseling resources. Our goals are to: a) help domestic violence victims escape abusive relationships and establish new, independent lives; b) help at-risk children – living in homes where abuse, neglect, domestic violence, mental illness or drug abuse is present – find safe and stable homes with a non-violent parent, relative or friend.

Last night's Voices of Resilience event was truly inspiring and impactful. The conversation with Nikki and Michelle was a thought-provoking discussion on how we can make our legal system work better for survivors of domestic violence and underscored the importance of strong legal advocacy and the need for more compassionate policies that protect survivors. Thanks to Sullivan & Cromwell LLP for hosting the event and to Kamil Shields for her excellent moderation, which made the evening’s conversation both impactful and inspiring.
