The hill I’ll die on - parents make the BEST workers. Especially moms. In recruiting you get to hear every derogatory, cliche line in the business: “I’m worried about that work gap.” “We don’t have special hours.” “This is just how the industry is.” Because the “industry” doesn’t like the idea of “competing” priorities. Here’s the thing, though, kids are not a competing priority to work. They’re the reason parents work so hard. For almost three years I got to hire the most amazing people for some of the coolest unicorn start-ups and a few bigger names, too (anyone here drink Redbull 😉) And my two girls were right there with me. Every meeting, every work-trip, every late night and early morning. My oldest would even set up her pink, plastic laptop next to mine - a show of solidarity and support. I nursed my youngest while sourcing candidates on Github. I chose not to put them in daycare, and I didn’t miss a beat professionally. How? Because everything I did, I did it for them. To provide for them, yes. But also to show my two little girls that women can do it all. That being a mom is not separate from being successful. That the way the industry says it has to be... Isn’t really true. I did things different and still created success at my company, for my clients, within my team and in my home. All of our lives look different, sure. But we should get the choice to make them look the way we want them to, right? I should be able to use my degree and be the mom I want to be, right? Shouldn’t that be the norm? We do things a little different in my house, and I’m here to say you can, too. If you don’t like what I have to say, that’s alright, because I’m writing this for me, as I continue a job search in a challenging market. To remind myself that even now, I’m doing it for them. And I can do it.
