About us

DARPA is an agency of the U.S. Department of Defense with a singular and enduring mission: to make pivotal investments in breakthrough technologies for national security. The Agency explicitly reaches for transformational change instead of incremental advances. To do so, it works within an innovation ecosystem that includes academic, corporate and governmental partners, with a constant focus on the Nation’s military Services, which work with DARPA to create new strategic opportunities and novel tactical options. DARPA comprises approximately 220 government employees in six technical offices, including nearly 100 program managers, who together oversee about 250 research and development programs. DARPA goes to great lengths to identify, recruit and support excellent program managers—extraordinary individuals who are at the top of their fields and are hungry for the opportunity to push the limits of their disciplines. These leaders, who are at the very heart of DARPA’s history of success, come from academia, industry and government agencies for limited stints, generally three to five years. That deadline fuels the signature DARPA urgency to achieve success in less time than might be considered reasonable in a conventional setting. Program managers address challenges broadly, spanning the spectrum from deep science to systems to capabilities, but ultimately they are driven by the desire to make a difference. They define their programs, set milestones, meet with their performers and assiduously track progress. But they are also constantly probing for the next big thing in their fields, communicating with leaders in the scientific and engineering community to identify new challenges and potential solutions. DARPA is always on the lookout for outstanding individuals who can meet our demanding needs in the Agency’s technical and support offices. Interested individuals may submit a resume/CV to employment@darpa.mil.

  • 📢 Join the conversation on AI alignment at our upcoming workshop at the IEEE Conference on Artificial Intelligence this May! 📢 We’re hosting the workshop, “Human Alignment in AI Decision-Making Systems: An Inter-disciplinary Approach towards Trustworthy AI.” All who are interested are welcome to attend. As AI continues to play a growing role in decision-making—both in everyday life and high-stakes environments—ensuring its alignment with human decision-makers is more critical than ever. But what does AI alignment really mean? What would it take to confidently delegate high-stakes decisions to AI systems? Our upcoming workshop brings together experts from computer science, AI, psychology, and the social sciences to tackle some of the biggest questions in AI alignment: 🔹 Can AI truly align with human values? If so, which ones? 🔹 How does AI alignment impact trust and delegation? 🔹 What are the ethical, legal, and societal implications of alignment? 🔹 How can we develop better models, metrics, and frameworks to measure and improve AI alignment? We’re calling on researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to join us in shaping the future of human-aligned AI. This workshop will feature engaging discussions, research presentations, and keynotes from leaders in the field. 📅 May 5-7 📍 Santa Clara, California 📌 More details at https://lnkd.in/e55xpFge #AIAlignment #ResponsibleAI #HumanCenteredAI #TrustworthyAI #AITrust

  • At DARPA, we recognize that new contracting and business processes and mechanisms are key to enabling development of breakthrough technologies at the speed of relevance. Building on a legacy of streamlining defense R&D contracting, our Contracts Management Office is seeking input from commercial sources with expertise in AI/LLMs, end-to-end automation, and abstract/proposal evaluation. The goal is to maximize available tools to enhance DARPA’s ability to rapidly transition through each step of the acquisition process: requirements and solicitation generation through abstract and proposal evaluations to eventual award and execution. The response deadline is March 26 at 5 p.m. ET. Find a link to the RFI with full details, and learn more about DARPA's contracting team and its commitment to acquisition innovation, on our website: https://lnkd.in/eiiBpeih

  • AI is revolutionizing modern warfare, but like any technology, it has weaknesses that adversaries can exploit. While researchers have tested AI vulnerabilities in controlled labs, we still don’t fully understand how these attacks would play out in real-world military operations, making the operational AI security risks unknown. DARPA’s Securing Artificial Intelligence for Battlefield Effective Robustness (SABER) program is stepping up to fill this critical gap to ensure AI-enabled battlefield systems are secure, resilient, and mission-ready. The program aims to build an exemplar AI red-teaming framework capable of continuously integrating and employing emerging counter-AI techniques and tools to operationally assess AI-enabled battlefield systems. 🚨 Want to get involved? Visit the SABER Broad Agency Announcement for complete details. Abstracts are due March 31, and proposals on May 6. 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e62TkW_y

  • We invite scientists, researchers, and engineers in the Midwest to help pioneer game-changing capabilities for our warfighters. DARPA’s Defense Sciences Office (DSO) is hosting Discover DSO Day (D3) in Chicago, April 23-24. The event’s objective is to connect DSO with the science and technology community in the Midwest region to help generate world-leading technologies and capabilities for U.S. national security, which is critical to the Office’s mission of creating and preventing scientific surprise. D3 Chicago is the latest outreach event for DSO, which recently hosted similar events on the West and East Coasts in San Francisco and Boston, respectively. The event is in person only.
