Here's an example of some of the consulting work DataedX Group has been doing recently with the US General Services Administration. Our founder, Brandeis Marshall, PhD, recently co-authored a paper in partnership with Kaniz Fatima, Michael Schuckers, Gerardo Cruz Ortiz, Daqing Hou, Sandip Purnapatra, PhD, Tiffany Andrews, Ambuj Neupane, and Stephanie Schuckers. This scholarly product went on to be presented at the IEEE International Joint Conference on Biometrics. Learn more about the conference here: https://lnkd.in/epydXzav GSA/CITeR Needs: • A culturally competent data scholar to help them achieve their equitable access goals. • An external perspective on assessing the data gaps in the forgery and similarity fraud scenarios across pre-determined demographics. • The objective -- to help the team interpret the vendor’s performance and identity verification capabilities. Our Deliveries: • Weekly meeting attendance to review and discuss newly process vendors’ results. • Illustrated the considerations, pain points and implications between statistical errors and societal biases • Shared feedback, recommendations and resources centering data equity strategies. The Outcomes: • Our guidance helped standardize data collection and documentation processes. • DataedX, CITeR and the GSA team are contributing to facial verification research  through public scholarship dissemination. • The CITeR and GSA teams are now better equipped to distinguish amongst algorithmic errors, network errors and bias across demographic groups. You can read the paper, "A large-scale study of performance and equity of commercial remote identity verification technologies across demographics" by clicking the link below. In the latest edition of the RTN, we're talking about Gavin Newsom's (Governor, CA) veto of the first-in-nation AI safety bill. "California’s Gov. Gavin Newsom (on September 29) vetoed a landmark bill aimed at establishing safety measures for large artificial intelligence models. Supporters of the bill said it would have set guardrails around job loss, misinformation, invasions of privacy, and automation bias related to large-scale AI models." Admittedly, this bill isn’t perfect. The U.S. Congress – both in the House of Representatives and Senate, have proposed federal legislation, which have largely been bipartisan since the late 20-teens. The Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights was released in October 2022 by the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy. No bill has turned into law. Meanwhile, the E.U. has enacted GDPR, Digital Services Act, Digital Market Act and Artificial Intelligence Act into law during the same time period. Makes you go, hmmm 🤔 Read the "Rebel Tech Newsletter No. 70: Hype vs. Humanity | Cali's AI Veto" to learn more about Cali’s AI happenings and why this bill veto reinforces the current #AIHype. I help techies build responsible data practices. Ask me how you can support BWD.

👋🏾 Let's end this week on a high note, shall we? "[...] Marshall uses everyday examples from Black women's lives, such as her washing her locs, as a way of teaching the reader about writing effective algorithms." - Catherine D'Ignazio Back in April, Catherine wrote an incredibly comprehensive review of my first book, Data Conscience for the Duke University Press. If you're an educator who's still on the fence about incorporating it into your syllabus, check this out: "Written in a conversational and engaging tone, Data Conscience covers a lot of ground at multiple scales, moving adeptly between code snippets, data entity diagrams, historical context, and visionary policy proposals. Each of the book's eleven chapters opens with one of Marshall's tweets from the past several years. [...] These tweets set the scene for the discussion to come and also orient the tone around conversation and dialogue." Read the rest of Catherine's review: https://lnkd.in/eCC89Wqt Data Conscience is more than a textbook, it's a call to action for the future leaders of tomorrow who are more interested in moving slow and building intentionally than "forever trying to do all the things at scale instead of quality." - Marshall, B. Data Conscience. 231. (Tweet) 😉 I wrote this for current, and future Rebel Tech Leaders -- those who acknowledge and are prepared to address the current limitations of software development. Get your copy of Data Conscience below, and have a great weekend, folks! Stay Rebel, Techie (link to book): https://lnkd.in/eS4JsmFV 💙

🎉 Join us in celebrating our founder Brandeis Marshall, PhD's second book anniversary (9/22/22) of Data Conscience: Algorithmic Siege on our Humanity! We are pleased to announce that her work is being used as course material in GA, NC, FL, NY and CA! She wrote this book as a call to action for rebel tech leaders (those who acknowledge and are prepared to address the current limitations of software development) who know the whole saying “move fast and break things” is itself broken and requires change. If you're an educator who wants to pave a more ethical path for your students (i.e. future rebel tech leaders) make sure to add Data Conscience to your 2025 curriculum. This week in the Rebel Tech Newsletter No. 69: Digital Sexism | A New Threat, we're talking about how WIRED reporting uncovered a site that “nudifies” photos for a fee—and posts a feed of user uploads. "The feed included pictures of young girls and images seemingly taken of strangers. With AI image-making technology becoming more powerful and easily accessible, the problem of nonconsensual nude deepfake images has grown more widespread and severe." The juxtaposition of women empowerment in the face of women’s objectification and degradation frustrates so many feminists of all gender identities. How can a world routinely and blatantly marginalize nearly 50% of its population? And yet here we are.
