🌊📢 Launched on World Reef Day: Rapidly Monitoring the Fourth Global Coral Bleaching Event 📢🌊 On World Reef Day, MERMAID and partners Wildlife Conservation Society WWF Coral Reef Rescue Initiative announce the launch of a new training video designed to assist scientists in rapidly monitoring the world's Fourth Global Coral Bleaching Event. 🗓️ June 1, 2024 – Climate change continues to trigger severe marine heatwaves, leading to widespread coral bleaching. Just last month, NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration and International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) reported the onset of the fourth global coral bleaching event, urging immediate action to monitor and protect our coral reefs. To address this urgent need, MERMAID, in collaboration with the Coral Reef Rescue Initiative, WCS, and WWF, has developed a training video for researchers. This video introduces a rapid assessment method for underwater coral reef monitoring and real-time bleaching events, guiding communities, researchers, and scientists in efficiently tracking coral health and uploading data to the open-source platform MERMAID. 📢 Dr. Emily Darling, WCS Director of Coral Reef Conservation and Co-Founder of MERMAID, emphasizes, “Over half of the world’s coral reefs experienced extreme heat stress this past year. To understand which reefs have bleached, survived, or recovered, underwater monitoring is crucial. By adopting standardized methods like MERMAID’s Rapid Assessment protocol, scientists can swiftly measure climate change impacts on coral reef biodiversity and integrity. We hope this training video accelerates the identification of climate-resilient reefs for conservation.” 📢 Carol Phua, Coral Reef Rescue Initiative Lead, adds, “Knowledge is power in the fight to protect coral reefs. This week, I’ve joined Wildlife Conservation Society Philippines, University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute, De La Salle University and Silliman University scientists to study climate resilient coral reefs in the Bohol Sea. Notice anything on the right side of this photo? The areas are Siquijor Island and the Bohol Sea are staying cool (so far) despite superheated temperatures in the northern and western Philippines during the Fourth Global Bleachign Event. What’s going on? Stay tuned - our team of scientists are diving all day and entering the data in MERMAID by night to contribute this important information to national policy.
