  • At DAWSON, our Native Hawaiian roots are deeply tied to the values of mālama (care), laulima (collaboration), and kōkua (helping others). As we honor February as Black History Month, we recognize the strength, resilience, and contributions of Black leaders, innovators, and changemakers—many of whom have paved the way for justice and opportunity for all. Just as Native Hawaiians strive to preserve culture, identity, and community, the Black community has a rich history of resilience and empowerment. We recognize the shared values of strength, unity, and advocacy that uplift all people. This month, we reflect on the importance of respect, representation, and the collective efforts that create a more just and equitable world. #BlackHistoryMonth #DAWSONOhana #AlohaUnity #Culture

  • February is Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Language Month), a month that honors and celebrates the native language of Hawaiʻi, encourages its preservation, and promotes learning efforts to strengthen the language. The Hawaiian language was officially banned from public school systems three years after the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1893, leaving the language facing extinction. In the 1970s, a renaissance of Hawaiian cultural identity caused a surge in interest in the language, and in 1978, ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi was recognized as an official language of the state. In the 1980s, ‘Aha Pūnana Leo and Kula Kaiapuni programs were established, creating immersion education for preschool and K-12 children, respectively. Hawaiian Language Month was designated in 2013 after Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed Act 28, the first bilingual statute in 70 years. Our contribution to the revitalization of ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi includes underwriting the Hawaiian Word of the Day program on Hawai‘i Public Radio; sponsorship of the ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi livestream broadcast for the Merrie Monarch Festival and the Kamehameha Schools Song Contest; infrastructure upgrades for Ke Kula ‘o Samuel M. Kamakau; support for ‘Aha Pūnana Leo o Lāhaina; and sponsorship of Ke Kula Kamaliʻi ʻo Hānaiaulu, a Hawaiian language immersion childcare center based at Windward Community College.   #MahinaOleloHawaii #Language #Culture #Hawaiian #Hawaii #Act28

  • Environmental Professionals Radio (EPR) recently spoke with Brian Brandt, P.E., Director of Operations Management at DAWSON. This podcast episode covers a wide range of topics, including confidence, the art of decision-making, and the 2023 wildfire that devastated Maui. Brian talks about his work in Maui with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the difficult Phase I work that DAWSON and its partners completed, assessing all debris, hazards, and more than 1,600 properties. Listen now at https://lnkd.in/dTVJ-eAY or wherever you get your podcasts. Shoutout to EPR hosts Nic Frederick (DAWSON’s Environmental Director of Conservation and Planning), Laura Thorne, and the National Association of Environmental Professionals. #DisasterResponse #Maui #MauiWildfires #USACE #FEMA #Environmental #Conservation

  • On Martin Luther King Day, we reflect on Dr. King's enduring legacy of equality, justice, and unity. This day reminds us of the importance of standing up for what is right, embracing diversity, and fostering an inclusive environment. In Native Hawaiian culture, values such as aloha (love, compassion, and kindness) and lōkahi (unity and harmony) play a significant role. These principles emphasize the importance of caring for others, fostering mutual respect, and working together toward common goals. We can all honor Dr. King’s vision by incorporating these principles into our actions every day. #MLKDay #MartinLutherKingDay #TogetherWeRise #KeepTheDreamAlive #Equality #Justice #Unity

Today, I’m taking a moment to celebrate something I’m extremely passionate about – International Mentoring Day! Many of us can name at least one person who has had a lasting, positive impact on us, be it a relative, teacher, coach, friend, coworker, or boss. Mentoring is a selfless and fulfilling act of giving your time to make someone else’s life better through meaningful connections and conversations. Thank you to all my mentors and to the people who have trusted me to mentor them side-by-side on their journeys. My mentees’ willingness to share their experiences and ask insightful questions has challenged me to think more broadly and they, in turn, have provided mentorship to me. I’m incredibly fortunate to have such inspiring individuals in my life, and I’m a better person for knowing them. I encourage each of you to reach out to someone today or help make a connection between two people you know. “A mentor is not someone who walks ahead of us and tells us how they did it. A mentor is someone who walks alongside us to guide us on what we can do.” ― Simon Sinek #Mentor #Mentorship #InternationalMentoringDay #MentoringMonth #Leadership

January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month This month highlights the importance of a holistic approach to preventing human trafficking and recognizing its intersection with other forms of violence and social issues. Connecting the dots between human trafficking, online harassment and abuse, interpersonal violence, and other forms of violence can assist in disrupting forms of exploitation. Building healthy relationships and strengthening the resilience of communities and industries can protect against vulnerabilities to human trafficking.  The Hawaiian Native Corporation is a proud supporter of Ho'ōla Nā Pua, an organization committed to the prevention of sex trafficking and providing care for the children of Hawai‘i who have been exploited. This includes programming to address prevention, intervention, empowerment, and health to create a continuum of care. Healthy recovery from severe trauma requires coordinated services that are culturally responsive, survivor-informed, and trauma-informed.
